i have a mate with a dead pc, im guessing at either a dead psu or dead motherboard

what is the minimum to connect for a psu to make it boot , ? is the 20pin plug enough?

You need to have the 20pin or 24pin depending on the motherboard also you need to have the 12v rail which is either 4pin or 8 pin depending on your motherboard and PSU. If you have a graphics card that needs power you need to connect that aswell.

As above but is the PSU fan spinning..

The best check to make is to turn off the PSU, remove the ATX connector, hotwire the PSU by placing a wire between the green pin and any black pin in the ATX, connect a fan to a Molex, then start up the PSU..

If the Fan spins.. faulty PSU. Otherwise it's a faulty Mobo.

While you are there, check the voltage using a multi-meter.

motherboard only has a 20pin connector (doesnt have the extra 12v 4/8pinl connector that some motherboards to) its quite old, just has 20 pin + hard drive/CD and fans connected.

testing the psu with green/black short, and its dead but as i undetstand this doesnt work on all psu's ?

just bought a new psu, will try it now

edit:

it was the psu, thank you all muchly
