what are they working on now , since the half life 2 engine is getting on quite abit , and we have crysis and farcry2 engine looks stunning , so what do valve plan to do to combat this?

I think the way the source engine is they're just happily adding more functionality to it at the moment. EP1 and EP2 both added new tech to it. I guess EP3 will be their next release, or is Left 4 Dead one of theirs?

Make good games as always mate, the engine is still being used to produce new games and they do improve on it a bit for each iteration, Episode 2 was clearly better :)

Also they're working on Episode 3 and in terms of the engine it's being optimized for multiple cores - i still love the looks of it so doesn't bother me.

I think Episode Three will be the last Half-Life game under the source engine at least, we'll probably have their new engine being showcased around 2010 I suppose.

But Valve have another excellent looking title, Left 4 Dead looks to be PC multiplayer game of the year. :D

Yeah probably, and they'll go to DX10 at that point too - regardless of their resistance :)

Ep2 and TF2 were on a new engine. Ep3 and L4D will probubly be on the same one, then a 3rd Source engine will be out for the next load of games.

Source is Source is Source

Ep2 and TF2 were on an updated Source engine. It's not a new engine, and I'll wager Ep3 will likely be on Source too. That's the whole point of the episodes. They're just expansions of the original Half Life 2. I dunno why you bought up Cryengine, which has nothing to do with this topic. Feeling the heat from Crysis?

my guess is some of their guys are working on ep3 on source engine, and without a doubt they are working on a new engine and half life 3 in some form also.

as for left for dead, i had no idea they had a new project in the pipeline, so cheers for the heads up, im off to check that out now!

Seen as they were mentioned in the OP, as a comparison, I dont understand what your getting at.

Ive played Crysis and Farcry, and didnt really rate either, whereas ive massively enjoyed most Source games.

Yup, working hard on HL2 Episode 3. In fact, they have been working on it since around half-way through Episode 2. It's the last installment, so I imagine there is a lot of pressure to deliver on this one. Dog gets a 60s paint job btw
