Howdy,

About 3 months ago I moved into a new house. Today I found a phone socket under one of the kitchen cabinets. Plugged in a handset and dialled the house from my mobile and it didn't ring, and dialled 150.

It is a Virgin media phone and allows outgoing calls, allthough I can't get the number via CID.

Spoke to their call center and they confirmed that I don't have a phone on my account (took cable BB when I moved in).

They said don't worry about it, it is not billed to you.

So looks like I have a free phone line here :-) Whats the deal in me using it, as I have no contract with them?

Will be handy for calling abroad :-)

Should also say thet my mobile reports "No number" not "private" as in CID with held.

Dial 174 on the land line to discover the number. The line may be cross connected with another in the cab and you may recieve incoming calls for the actual "owner" of the line.

Sweet just tried 174 and got the number. Dialled it from my BT land line and it rang.

heh heh

You'd be stupid to make abroad calls on it & use it. Someone somewhere will be getting charged for it & it'll eventually come back to you.

I dont think it would, the OP has no contract with the provider, if they want to give him free calls, well thats very nice of them.

I know exactly what I would be doing if I was in that position!

The thing is, if the phone has a valid number and you can dial out, that means it has both a E side and D side set-up. This means it will receive billing, this does not mean you will, but an account somewhere will exist with this number on. If you start using it will get disconnected after a couple of months. TBH, I would have expected it to have been disconnected due to non payment of line rental already, but you might get a little longer on it. Unless there has been some sort of mess up between ICMS and SIMS. (Their hardware management and billing systems).

They could look at it as stealing, especially if someone else has a contract with them, they won't be happy with you calling abroad at their cost.

Yep - if it isn't a technical fault/crossed lines then you'd basically be screwing over a previous occupant whose name the phone line is registered in.

If it is some sort of fault and you start phoning abroad then I doubt virgin media will be too pleased about it either.

It's almost like finding a wallet or something in your house that was left by the previous owner and spending the contents.

"Oh look, a free wallet lying on the floor, I'll spend the contents!"

:p
