80:20 here across the whole uni. Some courses are even more one-sided. Also apparently they positively discriminate in admissions to favour guys.

e: Oh and Ben M, good luck on the Chem MSci, as far as I'm aware only a handful of people actually made the grades to stay on the MSci course for the past few years, it's apparently quite brutal.

Talking about A levels is boring. You will have the same old turgid conversation with many people, trying to be polite as possible. People don't like having the same conversation. Talk about something spontanious and people will remember you.

However, more specifically, don't ask what people got in their A levels. It just makes you sound like an arse. Even worse, don't say things like 'how close did you get to 600/600?' - which I have been asked myself. You are all on a level playing field, no one likes the jerk who introduces him as getting 5 As at A level - again, someone I met.

Just. Do. Not. Do. It.
 
I'm going to Napier to do Animal Biology. I'm starting next week! EEK! I won't be matriculating same time as everyone else as I'm actually a witness in court for something that happened at my work ages ago! So I probably won't meet most of my class for a while! I'm a bit nervous because of that but I'll be totally fine after that!

I've always been interested in animal physiology (more so than humans) but the course also looks at microbiology, toxicology and looks at life forms from the bottom of the sea to my back garden. It's more for personal interest rather than looking for a high paying career out of it.

In my 4th year I also get to go to the Maldives to study ecosystems (that may have helped persuade me ;) )

I have to say, physiology is one of my least favourite subjects - its very dry and theres not a lot of room for insight. I find that subjects really come to life when looks in a useful present day context.

For example I find microbiology only interesting in terms of pathogens and disease, and 'animal' biology and behaviour only really interesting in the context of evolution. Likewise, molecular biology comes to life when you look at the prospects of genetic engineering. Indeed, thats when I realised plants are actually biologically more interesting because we can manipulate them to discover more about evolution than animals.

But yes, best of luck on your course.

Well that's the end of my first proper week at uni. And my God fluid mechanics is complicated! It's a good job we get tutorials after it lol. Engineering mechanics is also pretty tedious but I only have 3 hours of it a week so I can't really complain.

What are your views on your first full week of uni then? (The question's aimed more towards fresher's who've just done their first week after fresher's week)

It's not all parties. I mean I didn't go to any in fresher's week, mainly because I'm living at home rather than in accomodation so it's a bit of a drag to have to go into town every night. Anyway bars are where the fun's at, not clubs where you can't hear anything apart from the atrocious music they're playing :)
