Cheaper & slimmer PS3's are on the way

It's a fair point. The 360 and PS3 are both a lot noisier than any previous generation of console that I can remember. Admittedly the 360 is FAR worse but going from any past console to a PS3 is a large increase in noise.

My ps2 is far noisier than my ps3 for sure.

edit: mid you im talking about the first ps2 not the slimline which is true dead quite.

Indeed, the PS3 is far quieter than the original PS2 was; my PS3 makes virtually no noise at all. They did do a cooling system upgrade on the fullsize PS2s after a few years which made them far quieter though.

'a lot'

Sorry but I needed to say it.

I rely heavily on my spell checker but obviously as 'allot' is a real word I missed in the heat of the moment, I hope you can forgive me.

I think comparing it to the PS2 this early on is quite silly.

I don't know why tbh, I'm not and have not said that they will be down sizing the PS3 in the immediate future, but like they did with the PS2 I'm guessing there is a great possibility that they will do, Sony have a good history of downing sizing their electronics and are usually quite efficient at doing so, no doubt you've seen inside a PS3, you'll notice that the cooling unit and heat-sink combined takes up a hell of a lot of space due to the heat the cpu/gpu kicks out, if they could down scale that and take out the PSU like they did with the slim PS2 I think they could come up with a pretty sleek looking PS3, just my opinion mind.

I have two ps3's (an original 60GB and a brand new 80Gb) and both are completely silent gaming for two hours and playing movies (either BR or upscaled dvd)

They do need a lot of space to breath though, both of mine are in the open air rather than in a cabinet but there is no chance at all that in general the ps3 is louder than any previous console ....as its practically silent

Excellent news, now all they need to do it add BC.

T.

No they dont because few apart from on boards like this actually wanted it in the first place - if you do go out and buy a ps2

Why the hell would i write it if i didn't think my ps3 was noisy?

I had issues similar to yours, a couple of phone calls to Sony netted me a replacement unit that didn't produce anywhere near as much sound. The PS3 isn't a noisy unit, it seems there is a small number of faulty units that sound like hair dryers.

It's definitely louder than the N64, Dreamcast, GameCube, PS2 (no idea which version, but it wasn't the latest slimline) and XBox 1 imo.

Why are people arguing that the PS3 is louder/quieter than another console, when it's plainly obvious that the noise differs from one unit to the next?

Some, for whatever reason, don't ever seem to spin their fans up. Others spin up after doing something intensive for a while. Theres nothing wrong with either, that's just the way it is.
