Video editing /merging two separate avi's together?

I have two separate avi files that I want to grab a part of the stream and place it on top of the other stream to get a picture in picture effect, can you recommend some software that will do this.. ??

Just to make it a little harder I don't want the whole stream / picture from the one file, but just one corner (it's already in PIP mode but the main image in that stream is the wrong one. Doh !

The main file is 655mb but I only need half of it

(starting at 5:34)
The PIP footage is 155mb and again starting approx 6 mins in (might need aligning slightly as one recorder takes a few seconds longer to boot up before recording)

Total footage time will be under 10 mins.
Something you can do rghjones?

Just use Movie maker if you're running Vista, you can cut and slice stuff in there.

I'm looking to make a picture within a picture, not just slice one image in between another, movie maker cannot do that.

Ah Sorry Mate didn't read the thread properly, Pinnacle Studio does this I know for sure but cant recommend any others as I only use Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultra.

PiP effects are easily done in the Serif range .ie Serif Movie Plus .I have versions 4 ,5 and just got the new X3 version , but not to keen on it at the minute .
I was thinking of selling my early versions , there very good and easy to use .

I bought Pinnacle studio 12 Ultimate last night.. I'll have a go at it myself now.

or if yo use XP still, just donwload it and use it.. It's free and works OK.
