Mornin :)

I need a PC for playing Warhammer Online. The min specs of which are:

2.5 GHz P4 (single core) processor or equivalent
1 Gigabyte RAM
A 128 MB Video Card, with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
At least 15 GB of hard drive space

I have an AMD 2500 system with an AGP GeForce 6800 graphics card, and the game doesnt run very well at all. Could anyone please recommend me the cheapest possible way to upgrade this PC to something worthy of such a game?

Would a better AGP graphics card suffice?

I think you are going to struggle with your current setup to be honest, even with the odd upgrade. You thought about getting a cheap Core 2 duo, motherboard, ram and GPU? What would be your maximum budget?

I expected as much. I have a case and all the peripherals. I also have two IDE hard drives and a DVD drive... I think I may have an IDE problem in a future pc, they seem to be downsizing the IDE capabilities!
Well, I can probably live with 1 hard drive.

So my first thought was the following:

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) £32.99
Asus GeForce EN8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £65.99
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.50GHz (800FSB) - Retail £49.99
Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK) £59.99
Asus P5K SE-EPU Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £51.99

Sub Total : £260.95
VAT : £45.67
Total : £306.62

Based on the Titan Spirit PC

But I'd love to get this under £250, has anyone any suggestions for where I could cut back and still see a half decent performance in War online?

Many thanks.

Have cut it to £260 with a different PSU and ram, any opinions?

OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £19.99
Asus GeForce EN8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £65.99Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.50GHz (800FSB) - Retail £49.99
Asus P5K SE-EPU Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £51.99
Hiper 530W HPU-4M530 SLi Certified ATX 2.2 PSU £31.99

Sub Total : £219.95
VAT : £38.49
Total : £258.44

Is this going to have a significant impact over the £300 build?

Yeah, change the 520w corsair modular to the 450w Corsair psu. Will save you a few quid and is more than sufficient for that systems needs.

You could get a 4670 instead of the 8800GT, its a little cheaper, its very low on power draw and almost as quick as the 8800GT. Especially as those Hiper PSU's have problems with power hungry devices causing them to go pop.

And this setup should still be fine for what you want.

Oh thats a good psu. The 4670 doesnt actually need any external cables for power, as its very low on power. I dont think youll need the Hiper then.

If you wanted you could get the Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4850 thats on sale from the money that would have gone to the 8800GT and the PSU.
The 4850 is a much better card both in terms of overall performance and value for money and will be more futureproof. That OCZ PSU shouldnt have a problem powering the card either (though the 4850 will need a pcie connector).

I went for the 8800 and built it all last night. The hard drive gave me jip so I had to format, which took approximately seven years, and it was 2am when I got the network up and went to bed.
Very anxious to try warhammer and see if theres any improvement! Hopefully will make it tonight :)
Cheers for all the advice.

Get one of OCs basic systems (Asus Vintage) for under £200 pounds without OS and put a £100 graphics card on it. It'll blow those requirements out of the water for well under £300... It will also mean you can easily speed it up just by putting a better CPU in later...

It's been an impressive difference indeed! For £225 we bought the mobo, ram, 8800 gfx and 2.5g dual core, and the wife is overjoyed with her warhammer performance! :)
Thanks everyone for the advice :)
