Old Employer Paid me After I left - Now demanding money back?

Hi,

Bit of a shot in the dark in case anyone has had this before but basically whilst I was at university I was working part time in Argos. Now, 4 months ago I left this job due to me graduating. Today i've had a phone call from them saying that they have accidentally been paying me basic hours since i've left and now they want 700 odd quid back?!

I genuinely haven't noticed the extra money coming in as I recently got a new job which pays a fair bit more than part time retail does. Am I under any obligation to pay this back straight away/pay it back at all, given its their sodding fault? It's also come at the worst time as i've just put down a deposit on a flat :(

Does anyone know the law in sitations like this?

if its true you need to pay it back, you do not need to pay it back at all at once though.

I would probably offer to pay it back over 6 or 12months in monthly installments.
 
Don't quote me, but I believe you are required to pay it back. I don't think you have to bring something like that to their attention, but as they've now prompted you, I belive you have to pay up :(
 
When I worked at Argos during college they did this to me, but instead of asking for it back they took it back!
 
How can you not know?

Have you got statements? It will state what has gone in, where, and how much.

Chances are they're telling the truth though, as I doubt they would just ring up to try and get £700 out of someone...them being Argos and all.

I dont have better advise that that sadly. Maybe go pop in a see a solicitor for some advice.
Surely you can go back on your bank statements and see if Argos have actually put money into your bank account after you had left
 
If I where you, I'd call citizens advice bureau and ask them. They'd be able to say weather you have to pay it back or not.

If you do, I love the £1 a week idea. (that'll show em.....)
 
Yes i would do the £1 as suggested just to be annoying, and you get to keep the cash you already have, and you aint going to notice the odd pound going

Well they managed to get the money in your account in the first place im sure they could to the reverse.

Btw the argos in milton keynes sucks.... :p

Yes it does, and it's the flag store. Wasn't a bad little job during the college days.

They definitely have been paying me as i've just checked my account, I just hadn't noticed the extra 200 odd quid a month going in as I dont religiously check my account, I have a rough idea of how much im spending against how much i've been paid so dont usually have the need to.

I asked my manager if it needs to be paid back straight away and they just suggest 3 post dated cheques which removes the cash in 3 equal sums in the next 3 months. Thats still too much for me to put out by, especially since I haven't done anything wrong :(
