Best drummer in the world *

They must be different from your part of the world.
I've played with 100s of drummers and know 1000s of drummers and I've only known one who wasn't a miserable git.
They've usually got a chip on the shoulder because they have to watch the singers arse all night.

Tell me about it. My bands original drummer quit after throwing a hissy fit back in June. A month later he was begging to come back and was shocked to be told no. We've been playing with fill in drummers with friends bands ever since until we find a permanent one. It'd be cheaper and a lot less aggravation to buy a drum machine!

Best drummer though...got to go for Bonham. Pwer, skill, timing and could do more with one kick drum pedal than most drummers could do with a full kit.

Honourable mention.s to Ginger Baker too, great drummer, just didn't have Bonham's power.

As far as modern drummers go, I think Matt Helders is fantastic. When you see the basic kit he uses (Not too many Cymbals and Toms about) the beats he gets are great.

That is all

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Bill Bruford! Some of his stuff with King Crimson is amazing... check out the live "Great Deceiver" boxed set. Awesome "prog" drummer.

Ill probably get slatted for this, and Im not saying hes the best in the world, but what about....

Mark Richardson - Ex. Skunk Anansie , current drummer with Feeder and a very good session drummer! Have seen him session a couple of times and can turn his hand to more or else anything.

Best drummer for me doesn't necessarily equate with fastest, or most technically competent - it's all about the groove.

Buddy Rich had it in spades, as did Elvin Jones. There's obviously too many to mention, but for me at the moment, I'm into two different drummers: Brian Blade and Dave King.

Here's Dave King doing his thing with The Bad Plus.

Yep, he's in there as well I reckon.... although I'll reserve judgement about when he was extolling the virtues of the Simmons SDX late 80's/early 90's - the ABWH and Yes stuff he plays on around then is just "too" samply in places (although I love the ABWH album).

A curveball to throw in the mix is that Jan Hammer's actually pretty good skinsman, or was, "back in the day". Some nice playing on Jeff Beck albums, that for me just grooves like it should. Even Vinnie playing the same tracks live recently doesn't feel the same for me.

Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree)
