Sorry... another which card for 1680 x 1050 question!

There's really no point buying a card vastly more powerful than you need just for the sake of it when it costs so much more, even if the excuse is "future-proofing". By the time he needs that much power to run at that res there will be new tech out anyway, rendering the argument void.

A 4870 will be fine at that res until the next gen come out. :)

Agreed, theres no such thing as future-proofing.

Wouldn't call it any argument really, more a discussion.

If you buy a graphic card more powerful than you need now then it is going to be future proof. Yes, there will be new technology out, but you'll have your 4870 still that will still run games at a fairly decent FPS.

Of course there is, you don't always need the latest and fastest technology. A 4870 could easily last another few years.

I'm not talking future proofing for 10 years, I'm just saying if you buy a card more powerful than what you need then it'll last longer than card that only just suites your needs. It might not be future proof for the latest games, but it will be for your own personal uses.

Thank you so much all for your responses, I have been convinced to go for the 4870!

Now which one? I like the look of the overclocked 800MHz version, or do I go for the 1GB or just a bog standard version and overclock?! I will stop asking after this ;)
4870 is a wise choice.
Why not go for the 1GB version its darn cheap anyway.

Well the following charts show that even on lower resolutions on some games you get significantly more frames on a faster rated card

At the end of the day, see what games you want to play and then check out the reviews and see what game of frames your going to get, if you play with things like V sync enabled whih a lot of people do, then that taxes cards more and faster cards will handle that better in graphically intense games
