Can xbox 360 connect to xbox live?

My nephew is just about to buy an xbox 360 Arcade, but someone has told him that particular version can't make use of xbox live and online gaming etc. Is this true?

Garbage, its fine.

He will need a Gold Subscription to play people online though, he gets a month free when he creates a new account though IIRC.

Nope. Just stick a network cable in, create an account and away you go.

Being an Arcade, won't it need some sort of Memory device first?

Can i just jump in and say it's worth forking out that little bit extra for a premium/pro, the harddrive is an immensely useful part of the system and costs more separately than it does to just fork out for the higher model that comes with it. I can see your nephew a few months down the line deciding he wants the harddrive and coming out of it having spent more in the long run than he would have to just opt for the slightly more expensive choice now.

It's fine he just won't be able to download most of the stuff from live marketplace without a hard drive.

the memory card you get with it is too small for demos etc, but big enough to store save games and the xbox live account
