If Microsoft was to walk away from consoles tomorrow what would happen in your opinion?

With Ninty being so family friendly with the WII and Sony slowly getting up to speed what do you feel would happen next gen?

I can't see Sony pushing as much out if they are the only "hardcore" console so to speak, and everyone agree's that competiton is good for the market

What would happen? I'd be stuck with the PS3 for console online gaming.

NO THANKS, it's like playing with a bunch of mutes (bots).

Or I could buy a Wii and exchange credit car...I mean friend numbers with people, OH JOY.

Firstly I wouldn't be suprised. The console market just doesn't make MS enough money. It will take 5 successfull generations of xbox to recover what they have already wasted.

I guess Sony could take less risks and manufacture a more reliable but cheaper not so cutting edge console each time and nintendo I have no clue what they will try next.

Sony would sell more PS3s and people would be annoyed

I think even the biggest fangirl can admit that Ms are now a critical part of the console market, and without them everyone would be worse off.

Sony are in the same position financeally with there game department.
I am sure that i have read on the internet that all there profits from the ps2 have been used up with the ps3 development etc.
I would think MS are in a better position now than Sony are.
I have also read that Ms make a small profit from the 360 now.
Also they must be making a fair bit of money from the games as the 360 has the biggest attach rate of all the consoles.
Then dont forget xbox live they must be raking in money from that as well.

This.

It's be like if ATi or Nvidia left the graphics card business. We, the consumer, would be the worst off.

Console market would be dead for me, no competition would lead to Sony being even more annoying. Massive delays for europe, price hikes, shoddy software. Id jump straight back to PC.

Not sure - it wouldn't be good for the market IMO

Even though I have a PS3 it was a hard decision and I know plenty of people with XBox 360s (which are awesome consoles). It would mean a lack of competition which is always a bad thing

Perhaps Sega would fill up the gap (unlikely) or even Apple

It would be a disaster for gamers if there was only Sony.
MS are making Sony work harder all the time to further improve there ps3.
Sony would not be trying to improve there online system all the time if there was no Microsoft.
The same thing would apply if Sony gave up on consoles.
Ms would not have to keep improving the 360 all the time with new dashboards etc.
But the worst thing that would happen is there would be no competition as regards to prices.
We need two or three consoles in the market so we have the choice of which is best for our needs.

All 3 big companies would be far worse off. Software devs will find themselves with a radically smaller console installed base, and studios too large to develop for just two systems (or one major gaming system and one minor system in the eyes of some). It would have dire consequences across the broad spectrum of the industry. We -need- all three console developers in the fray.

I doubt most of this, they may well charge for live but its an infrustructre that has to be paid for. Not only this, but with the cost of R&D, marketing and advertising used for MS to enter the market in the first place, as previously stated, they will need a few Gens of console to be in total black on this project.

I think everyone can agree that it would be a bad thing for the games industry. I wouldn't want to see any of the console makers drop out as the all push each other to innovate and improve.
