Just found out I'm getting a pay cut :(

It's a personal business run by the boss who also, up until recently, was the head chef. My manager hasn't heard of these pay cuts either, he's a little miffed it's the first time he's heard of it, hah :)

Minimum wage goes up next month anyway doesn't it?

A nice way to increase unemployment at a time when jobs are becoming more scarce. The minimum wage was introduced to prevent rates which amounted to slave labour. Now its just a burden to the economy. Also doesnt help to bring inflation under control.

"March 6 2008 - The Government has announced that the adult minimum wage rate will rise from £5.52 to £5.73 an hour in October. The youth rate for those aged 18 to 21 will be increased from £4.60 to £4.77. The Government has also said that the rate for workers aged 16-17 years should increase from £3.40 to £3.53."

Just man up and talk to the boss or go get another minimum wage job. It's not as if you're on a good wage so jobs are hard to come by at the same wage!! Dont let people take advantage of you if you're not happy about it.

Dont be stupid and just walk out if you need the money, but I'm sure its not really that hard to find another job working in a bar or restaurant  Just go elsewhere.

Leave. Surely there are plenty of other restaurants in Bristol which would pay more than minimum wage for an experienced waiter?

I don't understand how managers can get things so wrong. If you have a good set of trained staff why stuff them? It will cost more in the long run to train up new staff when people start leaving. The best run companies are those who respect the staff.

To the OP: Your wages are going from a flat £6 p/h to £5.52 p/h + tips. Is that right? Now it seems to me that this might not actually be a pay cut - it could actually still be a pay rise depending on how much you earn in the way of tips. You'd only need to earn 50p p/h in tips to break even on this deal - surely if the restaurant is busy then you'd do that easily? I know the tips will probably be shared, but should still be possible. Do you think that's realistic? Why not give things a week or two and see how much you are actually earning?

Damn I forget how cushy my job is sometimes.

Minimum wage would be hell, dude get into even Low level I.T pays a hell of a lot more than waitering and more prospects too probably. (at least in my area)

whats this minimum wage you speak of ????

hehe I must say id have no way of living now if i was to go down to min wage :(

wtf, man that's unfair..?

i was on £3.50 washing dishes, 8 years ago, and swiftly moved up to £4.50, and I had about £10 tips every night (tips shared equally between the staff working)

Dude, you're posting on an internet forum therefore you know how to use the internet, therefore you have the skills to be doing a job that pays more than minimum wage. I worked for a company where some people hardly had a clue how to use their own PCs and they still had to give IT support to others... they were on £12/hour

A food price rise and a pay cut? :( Tell your boss to stick the job up his arse

Agreed. You could get a job anywhere for minimum wage. The guy sounds like an **** hole. Just take another min wage job until you can find something better.

I don't really agree with "service changes", especially if it goes to the business. A tip is a tip and it should always go to the person that served you, even more so if their no earning a decent wage in the first place. It's not your fault if his business isn't making any money.

I know that must suck for you but think how much money will you have from tips, it is going to be much more that if you were getting payed 50 pence more per hour.

just tell the boss you want a rise or atleast your 6 quid an our or you are leaving..

worth a try rather than just leaving anyway.

Do this but try to have another job lined up, because i doubt he will agree to pay you 6ph
