It is individuals, or small groups of people, wanting power that is to blame. Religion is merely a tool to gain that power.

Not exactly, the Bible contains the Torah as well as lots of other parts, written by over 1600 years by more than 40 authors with different backgrounds, yet remains unified in its theme and stance.

I think (but don't know for sure) that the Qur'an also contains the Torah but then diverges into other teachings which significantly differ from the Bible.
