Hi,

I'm looking at going to university, to study Engineering (Mechanical or Automotive).

Which unis should I be looking at for these courses? I've currently got Brunel on my list, and need a few others to look at. Who else has studied these courses?

Thanks :)

Depends on what you want? ICL and Bath are rated highly for Aero, Manchester (well UMIST) was near the top when I went there but after joining with Manchester it dropped a bit.

Depends on what grades you are looking at getting aswell.

See, here's the issue. I didn't do AS/A Levels, So i've got GCSE's, basically, plus some other random bits of paper. So I need to do a Foundation year first. So far, Brunel is the only place I can see which definately offers this.

I did a foundation year at Birmingham - top uni although its gone downhill a bit since the year I joined :P

Manchester does a foundation year, so does Glasgow/Strathclyde.

iirc most will do a foundation year but you might have to ring them as they sometimes do them out of house (local colleges etc)

Nottingham is ace, bath is good too.

In nottingham if you can't get *** high grades for mechanical and actually fancy a more rounded course then check out the materials engineering or mechanical engineering, materials, and manufacture. Lower grades, and less CAD + Fluid Mechanics rubbish and more into the steels, polymers, and composite materials as well as how to manufactuer them. Better than a Mech Enger and their 'Just choose steel EN474891798274981274' then do calculations and that is that :p

Cambridge of course.:)

I also applied at Nottingham, Bristol, Loughborough, Warwick, and Durham - all good unis for engineering.

edit: ^yeah, some predicted grades would be useful.

I should add, i'll be 23 in September 2009.

I'm doing auto eng at swansea met and i love the course and the place. The uni has loads of links in motorsport and great facilities despite being un-modern.

Oooooh someones bitter. :p

Sitting at work doing CAD at the moment, good ol' Solidworks :D

Just glad I didn't get the grade in Maths and did a more well rounded course. It's amazing to see the Mech Engers try to understand anything about grain structures, phase diagrams, surface treatments and manufacturing methods, all they can do is quote CAD and bending equations (ok I'm taking the **** now :D)

Engineering is great, just get into oil if you want the money. I'm doing well in London with our sub surface choo choo trains, but London being London means stupid rent and living costs.

I'm looking at going swansea for auto eng :) You got any more information about the place/course etc. What is nightlife like, etc.
