While lots bad has been done in the name of religion, LOTS of nations have banded together for the same reason and without religion frankly helping thy neighbour wasn't really going on. While religion is bad, in general it gave us a means to find some similarity with at least some people. like now we have superpowers, without US, UK, Russia and China we'd go to war much more easily and often right now. Same back then, 200 nations would all be at war with someone around them trying to take their land, religion helped to band together countries to fight other religions and turned that 200 into 20, with people helping each other, armys essentially got much bigger and the cost of war grew, so the amount of times people would go to war, and the likelyhood of getting a good outcome went down.

I think religion probably did quite a bit of good overall.

But again, anyone suggesting they would change anything from before they were born is an idiot. If almost anything major, and possibly something very minor changed in the past you probably wouldn't be alive.
