French buying us out. EDF buying British Energy

Why don't you buy British cars, BMW Barry? :p

If somewhere down the line it means we're getting better deals then I'm all for it. Whether that will happen of course...

I'm not bothered at all whether something's owned by a foreigner or not. I mean e.g. Manchester City and Jaguar are still considered to be British brands are they not?

Why should THE most important industry be controlled by French people?

Theres no way they would have the best interests of Britain at heart.

Can you imagine the RIOTS in France if we bought the railway system? or all their nuclear power. It just wouldnt happen. I dont get why we cant be British anymore.
Seems like we are happy for the rest of the world to own us. We are getting OWND !

I believe they're being sly instead of declaring war on us because they know they'll lose, they're Building many nuclear power stations that will "Accidentally" melt down in the near future Just you wait
 
Actually French companys and also Spanish companys are protected by their respective government. IE the government will protect the company from foreign takeovers, even though its allowed under EU business law.
We are the only ones who play by the rules it seems, also our government selling off its holdings in companys and making them totally public doesn't help.

But that's ok, all we do is wait until they fix our problems and then invade, they will just run away and surrender so we can get it back easily enough :D
 
The problem is choice, British Energy seem to be unable to do the job. So we wither go with EDF or some yank company. An open market would be better, ie each country just buys what is best. But Seeing as EDF is part owned by the French gov I think the British gov should sort out British Energy also.
 
I work for British Energy, on the whole this is a good move and allows British Energy to have a firm place in New Nuclear Build.

EDF are the largest Nuclear Generator in the World. As a member of the public, I see this as very reassuring for new nuclear build. Their wealth of experience in operating/building the EPR designs is only a good thing as far as safety is concerned. And with the current AGR stations run safely by British ENergy coupled with the far greater capital investment money that will be made available to allow us better maintain the older stations allowing further lifetime extensions to the existing fleet.

Nuclear Energy is a far less volatile energy market and fuel comes from stable countries. Id far more prefer our utility being foreign owned and getting fuel from stable countires than being a british owned company like Centrica (Who ironically will buy a stake in EDF more than likely) relying on ridiculous gas prices.

Without EDF there would not be the £££ for the scale of New Nuclear Build that is required.

Why is this? Surely we have more money in the economy than France?

Or are you referring to our Governemnt that would rather bribe single mums with nursery money than actually spend real money on a nuclear program ?
 
I think barry seems to be concentrating purely on the fact that they're french, not that it's another country taking over some business.

It'll do us some good to have someone who's actually competent to take over and sort out the mess we've managed to get ourselves into, if it starts with energy then so be it.

e: I may be inclined to believe the French are invading if a wooden horse turns up at all of our power plants ;p
 
No I actually like the French.

They get the job done, run things well etc etc.

Surely instead of a pure buyout Gordon Clown could have stepped in and offered the French the build and maintainence contract, but still have the Powerstations actually owned by us ??
