Hello all.

I have been offered a job but I need ID.

They have asked for either a passport or birth certificate and NI card.

I don't have a passport, have a birth cert and have lost my NI card but know my number.

They have since said the birth cert is the wrong kind, even though it's the only one i've ever had and the NI card is needed EVEN THOUGH it's not proof of identity and I know the number.

I have a full drivers license but for some reason it's deemed unacceptable.

What can I do?

What do I do if I have lost my National Insurance number card?
Report it to your nearest DWP office, Social Security office in Northern Ireland or HM Revenue & Customs office. If you want a replacement card you will need to complete an application form. Remember that you are only allowed one replacement.

What is exactly wrong with your birth certificate?

The woman said my parents needed to have signed it.

I have the NI forms too, I'm just about to send them off but it'll take so long to arrive.

Well if you let the potential employer know about your NI card, surely they will understand to some extent?

And the birth certificate...Can no one sign it then? I can't remember if mine is signed or not to be perfectly honest.

There are two forms of Birth certificate, a 'full' one and a 'short' one, the Full one will have been signed by an official of some sort, and also your parents the 'short one is about half the size, and has less information on it.

You can get a replacement from your nearest births deaths and marriages office.

Well, I've just ordered a replacement for the large sum of £17.

Should arrive tomorrow, as for the NI card, I'll try and explain it's in the post.

Do they need to see the actual NI card or could you provide an old payslip which has the number on it?

That's all I've ever had to provide in the past which is lucky as I lost my card ages ago.
