Super Fuels not worth it ?

I get much better MPG with V power or BP ultimate. For a few dollars more ill save money in the long run.

The real question is, Which ones better BP or Shell?
 
What a great article... Take three shopping cars with tiny engines and feed them super and declare it a scam.

How about testing it on cars designed to use Super in the first place?
 
Lots of people say they get better mpg on super unleaded but the fact is unless you've got an engine that is specifically set up to take advantage of the higher octane (higher compression and further advanced ignition) it will make no difference.

An engine with electronically controlled timing and knock sensor will probably push it forwards and make a difference but a straight carbed or older injection system will not.

Thats the reason the subaru gets fed any ol stuff aslong as it has no ethanol i it:D

My other cars get fed the good stuff:)

Unfortunately you'be stumbled across a pretty poor piece of journalism

Certain cars, usually japanese performance cars are designed with High Octane fuel in mind. This is because in Japan, its quite normal for everybody to be using 99 RON fuel

Thus the japanese performance cars tend to want it. Mikes MR2 turbo for example, is a japanese market only car that was been imported over here. IF you try and run it with 95 RON fuel, it will not be happy at all, you will start to get det (detonation) and nasty things will happen to the engine

Same goes with Mitsubishi Evos, Subaru imprezas and other makes as well.

Its all to do with the design. Your average 1.6 shopping trolley wont feel any benefit in Mpg or performance, but evos fuel test found that a 2.0 Golf GTI Turbo did find measurable performance benefits from it

Its all to do with the design of the engine, as Jonny69 explains.

Exactly.

Certain cars actually need V-Power etc because they are mapped for it. I wouldn't dare run mine on normal unleaded.
 
What a great article, is this now going to fuel a new omg v-power is not worth it thread, fact of the matter is its pointless unless your cars designed or mapped to run on the stuff, mine for example now hates normal fuel because its been mapped to run on v-power or similar.

The tards at MailonSunday don't seem to understand this, its not like shell are forcing you to buy the stuff.

so really a normal family car is not going to see any difference

WOW! Never really reliased you could get such a performace gain just from switching fuel...

Ive currently got half a tank of regular cheapy fuel. Should I run that down then put in the super fuel or will topping up with it be ok?

Essentially yes

There could in theory be some normal family cars out there capable of adapating to the better fuel, but the way to tell is to check the handbook. If the car is designed for 97 RON fuel, it will say so in the handbook and recommend only Super Unleaded be used

If it doesnt say this, then the only benefit you'll see from BP Ultimate or Shell V power is the cleaning detergents present in them. The benefits of these detergents are debatable however.

At one point they did. 'V Power for the price of Regular' day was great for everyone apart from the poor staff who had car's queued off the forecourt all day and all night.

Joking aside blaming the jurno's on this is wrong. This forum generally isn't the target audience for that article, once you understand it's written for owners of 'average' cars (hence the Focus/Golf/Meganne being used) as an educational piece to the masses then it's not bad and makes a valid point, don't waste your money this isn't going to do you much good.

Taking it out of context to read 'everyone stop buying premium fuel it doesn't do anything more than standard on any car' is just as wrong.

Premium fuel benefits some engines more than others, 2 out of the the 3 carbed bikes I had preferred premium fuels, the 8 year old GSXR I have also loves the stuff, then again 3 out of the last 4 cars i've driven showed no advantage on premium.

I was under the impression that if the car has a turbo your better off running it on super but that is prob crap ! I allways put the good stuff in my VX turbo, its not THAT much more expensive and makes me feel better ;)
