I wouldnt pay more than £250 to get it replaced. I paid £235 from an independent Renault garage for my 172 cambelt replacement.
How much!?
It's only a standard 1.2 thing, it's not broken...just apparently its passed it's replacement date
I've never changed it...only had the car two years or so...but the cars only done 40,000 miles.
Ugh, money money money.
That's madness.
I can understand if the thing was broken, but crikey.
I'll have to look for some quotes near me or something...I don't even have £200 spare let alone £300 =/
That's what you get for treating yourself I guess! Dear dear.

Yeah, I've heard it's bad news if it actually snaps...
Is there a way to tell if it's getting bad? Or do I just have to believe people?
There is no way at all to guarantee a belt is in good condition (other than buying a new one). Even removing and inspecting it (which will cost almost as much as changing it) won't guarantee it won't fail in the near future. The manufacturer specifies a mileage and age at which their development work shows the belt is nearing the end of it's life. If either the belt or the tensioner fails it could cause serious damage to your engine that would make the cost of a new cam belt look like pocket money.
You appear to be under the misapprehension that you should only replace things when they are actually broken? The cam belt is a consumable item, just like tyres or brake pads, except it's hidden from view. You can still drive with bald tyres, but it's not a great idea...

.Cool thanks
No I'm aware it needs replacing at some point, like most thing's, I'd prefer to get it changed before it breaks naturally, just I am unaware of what kind of state it is actually in, and when infact it was last changed (if it ever has been...)
pistons smashing into valves is much more expensive than getting the cambelt changed.
