The studio liverpool guys have admitted the online is very much rubbish at present but they've promised paid for map packs along with with free online mode updates.

Hopefully the wait won't be too long.

Indeed, i instantly clicked quit and then realized an auto countdown to a rematch was there just as the window closed. :D

The online isn't bad tbh. true you cant invite people, but you can set a game to friends only and they can set a filter to only see friends servers. In about 5 seconds i managed to find Whappers server and get a race started (in which he obliterated me), but then he must have quit cos he vanished :P

[EDIT] And the netcode is good (wipeout HD in good netcode in a PS3 racing game shocker!)

Well, to be honest at the speeds this game runs i didn't have much time to look at the graphics, they look good though and it really DOES seem to run at 60fps, even when i decided to fire 3 rockets into a wall right next to me.

I'll upload one of my own rather badly taken photos in a moment.
 
It makes me wish more games would run at 1080p, it just looks so nice, sharp and clean!
