I’m aware that this might be dependent on the policy and I’m not going to go out and drive my dads Lambo if you say its ok……….

If I’m a named driver on my brothers insurance policy is it ok for me to drive other cars (generally)?

Thanks

Nope, you need to have DOC/V (driving other cars/vehicles or something like that) on your policy iirc. Which requires you to be over 21 (in most circumstances), fully comp and also had your license for a while.

That's what I have found out when trying to get DOC/V

You don't need to be comp, but most insurers don't allow DOC for younger drivers.

You must be the policyholder. The only exception is that spouses are quite often covered too.

Im with Quinn, TPFT, held a license for only about 2 and a half years and apparently, I have DOC cover. Which is unusual, but has come in handy once or twice.

I shall quote this becuase it is the truth. Ignore the rest of the noise because this is what you need to know, no matter how long this thread grows. To expand, even if you ARE the policyholder, you MUST have DOC SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED on your certificate of insurance.

Likewise, I was under the impression they are the only company that insures younger drivers like this. You pay for it mind, they're not the cheapest.

Actually, the only reason I went with them is because they are the cheapest, and by quite a margin at that.

And the vehicle you are going to drive also has to be insured by the owner.

Aye you need permission from the owner of the car, who has to be insured on it, to actually drive it.

I was pulled over by the plod for a random check once and they checked my insurance. Phoned my company as well as the owners company to make sure...

Really?, wow i didnt know that. It was the cheapest i could find a year ago and was my first car with 0 ncd, think it was £940 TPF&T. That seems pretty cheap if its DOC cover.

Think i might take my mates Type R for a spin now i know this (with his consent of course) :D.

Just had a look at my insurance certificate and it appears to be DOC. My renewal has come through and its £456.78 TPF&T :).

The policyholder, if they have a full EU license, may also drive with the permission of the owner, any Private Motor Car subject to the terms and conditions of the policy

Please don't offer advice on legal matters if you don't know what you are talking about. There is plenty of room for unfounded opinions in 'Which Focus should I buy' threads but when it relates to matters of motoring law it's best we only comment on things we are fairly certain about :)

Dont forget to make sure you can afford to buy your mate a new Type-R if you stack it, because it's third party only cover :)

I'm actually thinking of going fully comp this time as my insurance has almost halved from last year :). Just hope fully comp will be under £600 as thats the cheapest quote Ive got so far.

But i wouldn't be putting my foot down in someone else's car anyway :D.

Irrelevent - DOC is TPO, irrespective of your main policy :)

I know what my certificate says. My cover from Quinn stipulates what I said.

My brother is with quinn and i cant remember it saying the part about the other car being insured, I was looking at it today as well because he is lending a mates old banger for a few days.

To answer the question in the op (which has already been answered, but i want to give my 2p too :))

I am a named driver on my girlfriends insurance (fully comp).

It says something like :-

Mr Stigggeh and Miss Stigggeh are insured on the car, and in addition miss stigggeh can also drive other vehicles.
