Im looking to buy a new car around christmas time but im still in the deciding on what to get stage. I really like the MX5 and the TT around the 2000 to 2003 year (180 or 225ps versions). The one thing i want to know is about the TT's build quality. Is it any good ? Ive heard rumours that the early TT's were not so well put together but i would like to think that was nothing more than the rumour.

Ill be 22 and have 5 years no claims discount so insurance should be bearable even if i opt to get a TT. Ive been glancing at ones around the 5-6k mark.

Thanks for any info, i think they look great and would definately be a good 2nd car for me to get.

Test drove a TT 225 before settling on a Z4 for Mum. It was nice, actually, well built, I didnt like the interior ergonomics but there was no doubt it was well built and didn't rattle. Suprisingly noisy in the cabin at speed so not a relaxing place to cruise. Handling isn't actually that bad and it grips well. Performance is good from the 225, the 180 is pointless.

Also manages to look amazingly modern for a 10 year old car, as well, which is always good.

To be honest, I liked most things about it apart from the poor list of standard equipment, the awful sounding engine and the numb steering.

I would however rather put my head in a vice than buy a £5k TT. It will be an absolute shocker. Part of the reason we decided against the TT in the end is that without fail every single one I went to look at was shabby and looked like nobody gave a stuff about it. They don't seem to wear well.

Can you get a good TT for 5-6k, all the ones i've seen are 7.5k upwards unless you want a total nail.

Wouldn't have thought so.

Seems to be about 8K for a nice early 225 model. I certainly wouldn't want a TT for 5-6K. I'd have thought it would have just been LHD models for that.

And no, early ones do not suffer from poor build at all. my Dad has an early one and the interior is fine, exactly the same as the later ones.

The interior of the TT is the best bit! certainly my favourite of practically any car this side of anything exotic.

And in me experience the 225s are specced well. Leather, Climate Control, Xenons, BOSE stereo. OK so you don't get cruise or rain sensing wipers but it's hardly 'poor'.

Thanks for some rapid replies. Im in no rush to buy a car now so ill just keep saving more until i have a little more money to spend on one. I havent actually decided on which car i want yet so i may not end up with one.

The 3 cars i like the look of are MR2, MX5 and TT. I suppose im looking to buy something that looks pretty smart (well to me anyway).

I just sat in it and instantly kept finding things that were missing. No armrest. No multifunction wheel. No cruise. No rain sensor, etc etc. Just seemed like it had the bare essentials and nothing more - which isn't neccesarily a problem, but was just a point I thought I'd make.

I used to have a 2001 225 coupe I bought from new, I thought it was a great car at the time and had no issues with it whatsoever.

Hmm actually that's not true, the door glass can become misaligned. Audi claimed it was from slamming the door but I never did. It was sorted under warranty and was nothing more than a niggle.

2002 there was a facelift, well I say facelift but basically they binnned the S-Line version and made the 18" wheels standard and I think changed the headlight innards from black plastic to a titanium effect and changed the grill slats.

I had the Bose as an option as well as metallic paint, actually now I recall.. The stereo, paint and cruise were about the only choices you got on the 225 which made life refreshingly easy.

The cruise can be retrofitted very cheaply, as the car is fly by wire throttle controlled you just pick up any VAG cruise stalk from a scrapy and fit it into cowl.

p.s. I don't think a rain sensor is a dealbreaker on a sports coupe and there is a gorgeous aftermarket armrest you can get, made from aluminium and matching leathers which goes very well with the interior.

I've also been looking out for a 225 TT lately, you won't get one that's not a high miler or cat D for £5k or even 6K.

I'm personally looking for a 2002+ model as this has the 18" RS4 alloys as standard, traction control etc.

I found when sitting in the car it was a bit disappointing, didn't really feel that sporty compared to an MX5 for example. Yeah it was nice and well built but was a bit too 'normal' inside.

I still think these are really nice cars. Just don't expect to have rear passengers that are either older than 10 or actually have legs! The leather isn't too well wearing in one of these either iirc. My cousin has been having trouble selling her immaculate 180ps one at around the 6k mark for a while now so these seem to be getting cheaper and cheaper.

Can't stand the basic wheels though

If it wasn't for the fact my friends would keep asking me if i was a hairdresser, i'd seriously consider one.

pinkaardvark, thanks for the reply, would you recommend the car to anyone? Or is there anything I should look out for like a certain model or year?

Also, where can you get the matching armrest?
Thanks allot

The 180s just are not a desirable second hand buy. The spec is very poor compared to the 225 and they are not that much cheaper.
