freaking amazing gaphics in new mod for HL2

Ok, so can we all agree that as a technical exercise it is impressive?

But also in turn agree that the guy behind it is a wee bit too much in love with Alyx and has no concept of proportion?

the character pimper app that comes with it should be insta deleted, atrocious new models every single one of them. also delete the sounds folder from all 3 folders as the new music also sucks big time

having pointed out those 2 major flaws i have nothing else bad to say about this mod, i've played through hl2 and ep1 using the 8.2 version and its fantastic, made a huge difference to vanilla hl2 especially

for who asked the new hd alyx model is optinal , you can get hd original alyx ! here

Is there one universal look to skin or something?

They all look plastic. Except Crysis. You've named six games across three general engines by the way. UE, ID Tech, and Cryengine. The problem is with making skin reflect off light way too much. It's incredibly unconvincing. The original HL2 models were fine. Alyx never looked like a plastic doll before, now she does.

Even the new id game RAGE people are saying it looks plastic and thats a game that can have hundreds of gigs of textures in a scene.

It'll be a long time before we see convincing models in general. I stand firmly by my belief that Crysis is the only example around that can do it properly.

Maybe I just like Crysis too much...

To be fair, while his "Adriana Lima" style Alyx and other alternative models and re-textures are overly plastic looking and out of place, a lot of his work is still superb.

I have CMv8 installed and it is a HUGE difference over the default HL2, EP1 and EP2. You don't have to use his silly alternative models, and I have chosen to use this model from v7 instead, it's a close HD reproduction of the original Valve Alyx. In game it does look very good, the default Alyx is very low poly and low res in comparison if you place them side by side.

His other texture work is fantastic as well, he has retextured a huge part of every single game, added better sound effects and more music. He has also brought both HL2 and EP1 to the Orange Box version of Source engine, so you get HDR, motion blur and better shadows in every game instead of just EP2. For instance, check out Nova Prospect.

So yeah, some of his models may not be for everyone, but it's worth checking the mods out anyway since you can disable them!

How many times has he said "no more, people don't appreciate me"? Will he ever stop butchering Alyx?

I will have no part in this dirty little Alyx wet dream.

Agree with that, apart from Crysis. It's not always perfect but under certain lighting conditions the skin on the characters faces looks incredibly good (most likely due to subsurface scattering effects).

the problem with constantly improving the models is that the environment stays the same...... and hl2 never had the most detailed environments in the first place.....

any links to latest one available that is out now.fancy having a look :p by the looks of it you need to have the orange box installed to try it which sucks.

Wow, it sure must be difficult to add more polys to a 3d model. Hey, check out those boundaries, 'cos they're being PUSHED, baby!

Also, regarding the plastic skin thing, I really don't get how so many engines have done it wrong. Dry skin doesn't have specular reflection guys! Pretty bloody simple, why does no-one tone it down?

Have to say I prefer the original Alyx - that one just looks too 'shiny' - as another example of cryengine 2 and how well it reproduces facial characteristics here's a shot comparing it to another maybe slightly older game (don't know for sure) ...

Gotta say there isn't any or at least no where near as much of the waxy look to the skin, it reflects light much much more realistically.

I agree that Crysis has far and away the best looking (not in a gay way!) characters in any game, but what's been done on the HL2 engine is remarkable. Don't like the way that "new" Alyx looks though.

I agree the hi-res textures are impressive, but if this is possible on the engine, why don't valve implement something like it themselves? Surely they could do a better job than fake factory? They could just have it as a graphics option or something.

Lo naffa =]
