freaking amazing gaphics in new mod for HL2

Yep I spend most of my time in the games forums but yes I hate games ¬_¬
I'm just saying - we're now at version 9 of this mod and yet she still looks AWFUL! And how you can say that her face compares with recent games is laughable - sure if you were comparing her to a real life barbie doll prehaps I'd agree with you :p

I think it looks pretty good, can easily see pores and little imperfections, not just a straight up trowling on of makeup job.

Graphically speaking they really pushed the limits and the eyes especially look very good. Some very high resolution textures.

From a style point of view.. arg.

I also hate how most of the time she is hardly wearing anything :p How can she fight the battle against the combine with tight jeans and tiny vest top :p

Come on man, the level of polys and texturing in that face easily equals Crysis. I'm not saying the rest looks amazing but that face does, especially considering the engine is four years old. It's pretty undeniable.

Like I said though, I don't like how they've re-imagined Alyx. That level of detail on the proper Alyx would be awesome, the Alyx they've invented looks like the chavs slappers I might see in town on a Friday night.

Technically it's good but come on, the materials are all wrong. Skin looks like plastic, the physical proportions are all disfigured and out of shape, the characters are extremely ugly and unaesthetically pleasing, the actual designs are just poor. They may know how to slap a 2056x2056 texture and UV wraps onto models, but as far as graphical artistry goes, they're a bag of ****.

LOL check out Captain Killjoy, just another day in the games forum that hates games.

I never really liked the "supermodel" Alyx skins but I do love how Fakefactory pushes the boundaries of the four year-old Source engine, that closeup of her face easily competes with the textures of any recent title.
I agree with you there, just shows what can be done with textures when you aren't limited by the constraints of having to ship a game that can play on a wide spectrum of system specs.

Am I right in thinking the recent FakeFactory mods require 64bit and 4GB+?

If i had a fiver every time i heard that id be loaded by now.

Doom 3 omg plastic
quake 4 omg plastic
farcry omg plastic
crysis omg plastic
gears omg plastic
ut3 omg plastic

Insert basically any fps game the last five years, rinse and repeat.
Is there one universal look to skin or something?

For the highest level textures yes, as they fill more than the amount of ram 32bit can handle - it isn't because the hardware isn't up to it, it's the fact that 32bit operating systems themselves cannot deal with enough ram to hold all of the texture data.

On my system it runs perfectly at 4xaa, 1680x1050, max everything, and it isn't really a groundbreaking machine (AMD dual core, 8800gt, 4 gigs ddr1 ram). It'll typically stay at 60fps, only dropping in busy scenes. If you look at the closeup of the 'new' characters you see why it's impressive that it runs that well.

It's something referred to as uncanny valley - the closer to real life something looks the greater its flaws appear. Look on wikipedia, it's actually quite an interesting concept.

I take your point that it is very well done and it's incredible that it can still be archieved on an engine that is almost 4 or 5 years old.

The close-up of the face is impressive.
