I was wondering what oil you guys use?
I appreciate that this may not be the best place to ask, as I get the impression that you all love your cars too much, and want to give them the best, but are the more expensive oils worth it, or is it just marketing nonsense?

I can't decide if I should just get some cheap 10W 40 Halfords oil or spend almost twice as much on some Magnatec.
I did read on another forum that the Castrol has high iron wear rates as it has a lot of VI improvers :confused: so I don't like the sound of that. Any other brands that are worth getting?

mobil oils sems to show a lot of high iron wear in oil analysis reports....to much VI index improvers seem to do someting to the wear rate of the engines. mobil is loaded with VI improvers. Its a good oil and all, but ide suspect yuode be changing bearings sooner than expected.

Oh and wish me luck as I'll be doing my first oil filter change tomorrow.

i normally but the cheapest fully synthetic oil in the correct grade.

Magnatec has a bad reputation as its mineral based but our resident oil expert Simon normally defends the stuff stating low wear rates so who knows
 
I use Fuchs/Silkolene 5W-40 as reccomended by current owners and the Unit 8 where the car is serviced. My car drinks oil but this stuff seems to do the trick.
 
Mobil1 for me on the MX5 and whatever cheap fully synth for the xantia (usually total quartz 9000)

I change the oil on the mazda every 6-8k but on the xantia run it to the full 12,500 service interval. This is the only reason I don't use very cheapo oil in the xantia tbh.
 
On the 420, I've used... (in the following order)

Castrol GTX Magnatec
Mobil Super S 10w40 x2
Carlube 10w40 Diesel oil

And last weekend I changed the oil and filled up with Fuchs Titan XTR 10w40, so I'll see how that goes.
 
Where do you all get your oil from?
I had assumed halfords was going to be expensive, but then I popped in to the local petrol station last night and they were even more expensive.

If your after a specific brand then some people on here use: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/

Generic brands:
I'd try your local motor factors and see what their prices are. I used to get Vauxhall oil from the main dealer as I had trade account and it was a lot cheaper.

5-30W Castrol Edge keeps my engine all slippy inside.

Bought it from Halfords because I got a free Halfords Pro Screwdriver set with it :o
