Corvette ZR1 = Rip Off Britain

The UK price for the new ZR1 has been released and it's even higher than we thought. The ZR1 will start at £109,000 and the first cars will be delivered to UK customers towards the end of this year.

GM point out that this makes it the cheapest 200+mph supercar on sale, and factoring-in its largely carbonfibre body, standard carbon-ceramic brakes and 3-year 60,000-mile warranty it does look cheap compared to slower (if more exotic) cars like the £172,605 Ferrari Scuderia. However, in the US the ZR1 is $105,000 or £56,632 at today's rate of exchange.

Just two ZR1s will be delivered to the UK in '08 and less than ten in '09.

What's stopping us buying one in the US and shipping it over in a container? I assume the import duty would be massive but surely the savings would be huge.

I'm guessing the warranty might be the only problem?

I think Warranty would be the main issue, but I am sure that could be overcome. It annoys the hell out of me how much we pay for our cars over here compared to other countries, even those that pay more due to their tax rules. In the US all Porsches get 4 year warranties yet over in blighty it's 1 year and a vast price hike to extend it recently too!
 
Ah nice price difference, god job all that extra cash is put to good use.....

When i eventually pack my bags and leave i feel giving two fingers to those in power is going to feel great :)

In otherworse when deciding their price, they didnt take the US price and convert it, they looked at the price ferrari were charging for the scuderia and similar Carbon Fibre cars,and made theirs a bit cheaper

The fact this enabled them to charge the double the price they charge in the US has go nothing to do with lack of competition of course, and is merely due to "locational market differences" or some other PR bull ****
 
But it isnt a Scud and will not hold its value (once we are over the current market conditions) like a Scud will. The current market means that Ferrari have Scud's available and with a discount so those who bought them hoping to make a big profit will take a bath. Bringing 2 in this year means that REALLY wealthy owners with big collections will be satisfied but at that price I suspect its market is limited no matter how (and it is) capable the car may be.

I was in Park Lane this week and I spotted a Red one (might have been a Z06) in the Chevvy showroom and it does stand out, but its not got anywhere near the presense of a Scud in my opinion.

Would you not struggle to get an SVA? Not sure how it works exactly, but I know certain cars simply won't get one. Either that or I'm totally wrong, and if I am I'm about to order a Nissan GTR and have it containered over from Japan :)

Don't see why not, people are buying classic cars that have seen better days that pass. when I imported over my stang it was (note I am from Jersey but had to pay it-then get refunded).

10% Import Duty and VAT, + £1200 for container/shipping/insurance and handling.

Oddly, there's 1 GTR over in Guernsey, been there for a few months nobody's snapped it up yet :S
No price listed either.
 
Will the UK models be LHD too?

Also re:warranty, do you think the car will need 30-40k warranty work in the first 3 years?

I think the USA equivalent of SVA is generally stricter than Europe. Usually all that's needed is some changes to the lights.
