Generally speaking if you had a choice of a Marriot, Novotel or Mercure which would you say was likely to be the nicest? All are 4 star and appear to charge the same per night.

I'd probably pick Marriot, but only due to the fact that it's the only brand of the three that I've used (frequently), and have always had pleasurable/good experiences of Marriot hotels (both here and abroad).

I'd have to say the Marriot as well. I've stayed in two mecures (versailles and douai) and both were drab. Novatel always strikes me as an airport one night stay type of place. The marriot seems a bit more classy !

Novotel seems to have good facilities in terms of bar/restaurant/swimming pool etc, but the rooms are truely awful.

I stayed in a novotel in southampton and the rooms were very nice. Had a modern feel and overall I was pleased.

It depends entirely on where you're wanting it, but in general the Marriott is far better than the Novotel.

Don't have much experience of Mercure. That I have was poor, but was two trips to the same hotel so not very reliable.

Aren't Novotel and Mercure part of the same group?

I recently stayed in a Mercure hotel up in Scotland. Very nice room (£150 rates). The bed was comfy, the bathroom was spacious (shower big enough for 2-3 people, and a lovely bathtub). The breakfast and service was excellent too.

Havn't stayed at a Novotel or Marriott though, but that's my two pence on Mercure.
