Acoustic guitar mic?

What kind of price are you looking at? A good, all-purpose microphone is something like a Shure SM57. (probably in the region of £75) There's a lot of different techniques - some use 1 mic , some use 2, quite a few people put the electronics into the guitar itself.

If money is no issue, get a couple of Neumann U87's, brilliant microphones! (but about £1700 each!)

Well I doubt it will be used for recording, he said he just wants to listen to make the guitar louder as it's an acoustic guitar with no pick-ups, so I think the Neumann will be overkill (it does look like a very nice mic nonetheless!).

The Shure looks like it will work well, plus doesn't require phantom power as it's dynamic. My friend needs things to be as simple as possible. :)

I'm guessing some sort of pre-amp is needed for the shure when connected to a hifi as the hifi only has aux in? What would be a good one for the Shure if it's needed? Below £100 if possible.

An acoustic pickup will give you better tone than an SM57 ever will in a bedroom situation. It will be cheaper, require no amplifier save the hifi, and you wont need to mess around finding the sweetspot or with mic stands. Then when you want to record you jam the cable into the microphone input on your soundcard and fire up audacity and you are ready to go.

You can get pickups that just slide in to the soundhole like this one, and it's pretty nice also.

If you really want a mic, SE2200a are nice, they are a medium/large condensor microphone and require a decent phantom power source, an ART Tube MP would be the best bet on the budget.

SM57's not going to be that great for an acoustic, fine for sticking in front of a cab with an electric though...

In an ideal world a matched pair of large diaphragm condensers would be spot on, but in your case as suggested a pickup might be the better bet.
