Looking still at cars (bangernomics end of the market) and realised for £500-700 I can get quite a few nice (ish) bigger cars. Now seen tonight a nice looking (body wise) 316 just wondering as its and older (simpler?) BMW if something was to go wrong would repairs costs be similar to an old omega?

Also haven't been out it it but what sort of extras do you get in an "Se" as even the cheap omegas seem to have electric windows, mirrors and air con.

Or should I just stick to omegas?

No, no, no, no no. Just no. Bad idea. With your level of extreme car fail it's going to be a huge financial disaster :p

Oh come on, it'll be a laugh. :D

In all serious ness though, an old 3 series won't be any "nicer" than something cheaper to run

Because its old? Although its only done 68k!

Its had a skimmed/sort out HG 6 months ago, clutch May 07 and 12 months MOT. How crap/wrong can it be?

My really cheap 325i was great until it was stolen. My 525i hasn't been a success so far.

If you can fix it if it breaks, go for it - else buy something else!

Thats really what I wanted to ask.

In the omega I (in a very short amount of time) have gone from changing a tyre to = hand brake cable change, discs, pads, cambelt, new rad, aux belts, plugs, oil/petrol/air filter. I mean they were all so simple in the omega.

Would it be simular in the bmw?

I would expect to say be prepared to replace most of the balljoints and bushes on it but if it has 12 months test what the hell, you could weigh it in in 12 months time for £100...
:)

Also just wondering how do you "do" test drives in non dealer cars? I take it I would have to sort out some sort of insurance myself?

How have you bought them in the past? Personally i have simply gone out with previous owners then moved my own insurance over for a final little test drive once i am 99% sure i will buy it.

Well last two where dealers part-x type (sold as seen etc) deals and used norwhich unions free 7 days drive away insurance after buying and then sorted it out with our own when we got home.

If you are able enough to wave a spanner enough to do that to the Omega, then running a 4 pot e36 will be pretty much plain sailing - as much as any other car of that price bracket mind you.

All of the above was not a problem on my old 175k e36 318i, yes it went to specailists for the cambelt and Insp 2 services, otherwise, my Haynes Manual and a halfords socket set worked wonders for its running costs.

For that kind of money, no worse than any other punt!
