Right, Im joining the navy and need to do my fitness test, so I'm in the training of running for the test.

Did my 1.5 mile run 3 days ago and I an still acheing all over!! lol

I thought I'd start with a good pair of running shoes - looking at about £50 tops and can either go jjb or sports soccer.

Thanks a lot guys :)

Dont know of any around here mate- arnt asics supposed to be good? Can get them at jjb and sports soccer.

A pair of asics from your local JJB will aid your running considerably (I have a pair), but by far the best way to go about it is to go to a running shoe shop. Everyone runs slightly differently and different running shoes give support for different styles of running.

If you don't wish to locate such a shop, try out several pairs of asics for a run around the shop. You will look a tit, but it has to be done.

Go to a proper running shop and get proper running trainers.

+1

I started running earlier this year and started off in a pair of trainers I already had - my feet and lower legs would ache afterwards. Then my brother in law told me I should go to a running shop and get some help there, I tried on quite a few pairs and felt like an idiot running on a treadmill for about an hour with some guy staring at my feet - but I got the right shoes in the end, and they've really helped.

Asics. End of.

By far the best. Some people use "Saucony" runners, but I think they are rubbish.

Asics Gel have this compund in the sole that when an egg was dropped 10meters from a platform onto it, the gel absorbed all the shock, and the egg was undamaged.

Win.

Stretch a LOT! I run a lot, and seem to have muscles which cramp up really easily which is annoying. I find that stretching each morning and evening, and before and after a run for a good 10 minutes really really helps.

little bit off topic but i have a question about running shoes and it saves me making a new thread for a single question. The running shoes ive seen look very thin and lightweight, does this mean they dont have as much cushioning to absorb the impact of running as a normal pair of trainers?

Without knowing the shape of your feet and if you pronate no-one can recommend running shoes for you. Anyone who tells you what to buy based on what they use knows nothing about running distance.

Getting the wrong shoes can do irreperable damage to your knees and ankles; now I'm in my 30s I've got more mates with damaged knee cartilage, ankle tendons and crutiate ligaments than without. Finding a running partner who can do over 5k is getting difficult.

Seriously.

Look: Leicester Running Shop does gait analaysis and will help you select the right shoes for you.

You are more likely to enjoy running, continue to do it and get more out of it if you've got the right shoes.

like previously said go to a decent sports/running shop

everybodies feet are different and they will determine the correct type of shoe for you

wearing the wrong type will make your feet uncomfortable and could cause problems with your knees, etc

If you want good running shoes you need to have you gait checked, which involves going to a decent running shop. This is so they can pick you some shoes with the right level of support depending on how you land.
