Advance Wars fan Matthew Pyke, 20, was stabbed to death in his home in Nottingham, England, over what police suspect may have been an online dispute with a German gamer (via Telegraph.co.uk).

The suspect, 21-year-old David Heiss, was arrested near Frankfurt in Germany. Police at first didn't say whether the arrested man was Heiss, but details later emerged confirming that Heiss was in fact the man arrested in connection with this case (via This is Nottingham). Not long after the killing, Heiss posted a message on the Facebook page of Pyke's girlfriend, Joanna Witton, where he apologized for "having caused so much trouble lately."

Pyke and Witton ran a fansite for Advance Wars, which included (as many gaming fansites do) a forum for patrons to chat with each other. Police suspect a possible motive may be that Heiss -- who was a member of the forum under the name "Eagle the Lightning" -- entered into a dispute with Pyke online, and actually flew to the U.K. in order to exact this tragic "revenge." Curiously, another anonymous poster suggested that some forum members may know more about the case, with a message that read, "We may know a lot of what was going on prior to the killing, but I, for one, am not going to say any more."

Heiss is believed to be in custody in the German town of Limburg an der Lahn. He was scheduled to appear in court in Frankfurt for an extradition hearing, although according to MSN U.K., the hearing was delayed due to Nottinghamshire police failing to provide the extensive paperwork needed in time. It's also not yet known whether Heiss will contest the extradition application from British authorities.

Heiss' Facebook page shows he is "friends" with Witton, although the message he posted on her page was the first he ever left for her. It read in full, "I will pray for you -- you must be suffering unbelievable pain. I'm sorry for having caused so much trouble lately. I hope you won't lose all your hope. We will be there for you."

On Thursday, Pyke's parents left a memorial on his Facebook page. It read, "Darling Matthew. We love you so much and miss you. You were a truly good, sensitive person. Your smile will live on in our hearts."

If it end up being the reason, i cant believe someone would go that far becasue of a dispute in a games forum! Its a pretty sad world if someone would go out of the way to kill another person just because of a disagreement on a forum.

Was on BBC news as well:

Is it hard to believe people would go this far? I see people on this "mild" forum getting into silly name calling arguements like school children. Also some people seem to get really upset when their favourite game gets insulted (FIFA, PES, HALO come to mind on this forum). On other forums I have read people have gone as far as "researching" otehr people's details (name, address etc).

This is the next (il)logical step!!! Kill your foe before they reply to your post.

Well with Facebook, Myspace ect the research really wouldn't be too hard nowadays. Still killing someone over a minor issue really seems a bit over the top.

It's a good job this dude wasn't on the OCuK forums. He'd be classed as a serial killer if he spent any time withing GD.

It's a shame, as it's such a sad story, both that it's over a 'game' and the lengths which this guy has gone to, to 'extract his revenge'

Unless they didn't put their real details on said account.

Doesnt always matter, A quick google of that hotmail account can bring up all sorts of things. Forums, Social sites, Usernames.

Then do a search for usernames, and that gives you more info.

Put the pieces together and you can often find out lots.

And No, I havent. :p

Posted this in the GD thread (one of them lol) but i'll post it here again

This happened fairly close to where I live and from what I've been reading the guy that got stabbed was actually about to start the same uni course I've just finished at Notts Trent Uni.

It's pretty bad really and "WTF" does spring to mind that someone would go to such extreme's over an argument on the interwebs?!

I think this german dude also had a thing for the guy's g/f too goin from whats been in the local papers etc

This is why I try to keep my details anonymous. Don't want Kreeeee getting hysterical one day over reacting ;)

Joking aside, This guy came from Germany... Germany to exact this revenge. WTF!!! that's a little unhinged. If he is in fact the killer then he needs to be put away for life...

I can almost understand the guy who killed his mate because he borrowed then sold his "mystic magic sword of doom" for a small fortune and did not share the wealth with the original owner. But what did Matthew Pyke do to provoke such a strong reaction?

He called him a noob.

He called him a noob.

Although I feel like laughing at that, this situation is anything but funny. Its crazy. How can you kill someone over a forum argument. I may have found it funny if the guy came from Germany and gave the other guy a good punch in the head and left. Not saying that would not be crazy in itself, but to kill? WTF????

He called him a noob.

You noob, turn off your hax and learn to play :p

Horrific really, and finding ou details is quite easy these days. Just look at zefan and the other detectives findoung out NI number, address, and everything about that guy in GD going on about his mums focus with 17inch wolfraces :D

The scary thing is it takes absolutely no skill or effort to do that, so many people freely have their details floating about online!

Over bloody Advance Wars?
It's crap!

Bring it on Gerry!!

In all seriousness, it's so stupid that someone killed someone over a game.
