Have been thinking of getting a tattoo done for a while now - I think it's servere onset of Midlife Crisis but never mind.

Would like to get one done on my upper arm / Shoulder area but don't know anything about it. Can anyone give me some advice please ?

Thinking of something like this

With maybe something like this on the other side later on

I know they are very personal things but do you think that's a bit ambitious for a first tattoo ?
How big should it be, probably 6-8 inches ?
How long / how much would something like cost ?
Would be black only.

..oh, and does it hurt ? :p

Thanks :)

1: I think it's a bit normal and common for a tattoo
2: If on your arm, top of arm to joint near elbow.
3: 3hrs or less I guess, depends who you go with a lot.
4: All depends on the person, only time it hurts is near the end when they start going over already done areas and keep wiping it clean (they use some sort of gel/wax stuff though to keep it smooth.

I don't know a lot about tattoos, but I know if I ever wanted one I'd make sure it was as original as possible.

You see people with these tribal, dragon and tiger tattoos every day of the week, none of them really strike me as very original. But that might be just my opinion.

I'm planted strictly in the pro-tattoo camp, so I say go for it and just make sure do your research first.

However, this is GD so -

I'm looking to get a tattoo done in the same area so I'll be watching this thread closely.

Was looking to go for something original (hate tribal tattoos) like say the tube thing on the cover of lamb of gods new american gospel album down my upper arm.

the truth ^

Get it as big or small as you like. Take those images with and they should be able to scan them in, and transfer them with carbon paper so you can see before they start.

Does it hurt? I had mine in a similar position, except its wording, going up my left trap, over the left end of my collar bone and onto my left shoulder. Accross the collar bone hurt the most, felt like cutting, as it was done in one long line as opposed to cm by cm. On my actual trap felt quite nice, and on my shoulder/top of arm felt like stinging.

All easily bearable pain. If you want it that bad you'll bear the pain, simple as. What does it feel like? the sting of having an injection, constantly, crossed with intense scratching and a fair bit of blood. Try it and see!:p

Got any pictures?

Personally I would never have a tattoo and I don't like them. However, I can appreciate just about any art form and you do now and again see something that stands out and has a little something special about it. The examples in the OP do not stand out and are not special, IMO they look generic and say I want a tattoo to conform, nothing more. If you must limit youself to working in a shop / driving a van / doing other people's dirty work, then do it with style.

Get whatever tatoo you want. Nobody really cares if they're original or not, because it's yours. Huge Horses in these discussions.

Outlining does hurt a little more, but neither are an unbearable pain. It's discomfort more than pain. As mentioned, it can start to hurt if he's going over bits he's already done earlier in the session but you can start and stop as much as you like (but you're paying for the time, dont forget).

It should be as big as you like, as big as you feel comfortable with. If you're not "sure" you want one, get something smaller in a place you can keep it covered if you want to, just in case. If you are sure you want one, go wild.

Prices you'll have to research yourself. People are odd when it comes to tattoo's and i guess that's ok. Some people dont mind going to the little shop down the road and having it buzzed on for £20. Some people like the idea that they're paying £100's to have the best bloke in the area. For those designs you've posted, i'd say an average of £60 for 6 to 8 inches. Of course you can get it cheaper, but it's your call what you spend.

Just remember. It's your body, your decision and you can get whatever you want. Dont worry what other peple say about boring, unoriginality and most of all, wether it has "meaning" to it.

Id have one in a minute, if i could, when i wanted to, get it completely removed with no trace, until that day, im firmly in the no way dont do it category.....

GTFO. I'm doing very well for myself in a large professional company and have tattoos in very prominent and easily seen places (my forearm for one).

Tattoo != Reject from Society.

thats my thread just after i had it done. Try and go for something original, but don't copy me! :p

It's completely hidden the whole time, unless i'm in the gym, and is a reminder to me for personal reasons. No one see's it and i wont tell somebody what it means unless i want to. Chances are someone here will translate it but that doesn't bother me as chances are i'll never meet any of you!

I was being a bit tongue in cheek there, but everything is relative. When was the last time you saw the CEO of a major bank with a full sleave?

I do think tattoos are just a bit bla - most people I know with tatts are a bit dull and trying to project personality that they otherwise couldn't.

No not at all, Anyone can get a tattoo

yeah id say about that, althought if you did decide too get it, the tattoo artist would size it up too suit your arm, to give you an idea what it'll look like and if you like it

How long / how much would something like cost ? I'd say your looking at about 70-100 for the panther, slightly more for the dragon.....

Oh yeah, and yeah it hurts but on your arm you wont notice it much :)
