Just like fully grown men arent allowed to take heroin here.

I'm not condoning Iranian law, but just saying how that argument sucks.

agreed but its a good example to see what we could have over here. Or should I say what we had over here

@ghost101: Those are illegal here because they are lethal and some people (like teenagers/kids) need the responsability taken away from them.

People in Africa getting their hands cut off for not voting the right person, genocide, human rights breaches in asia but someone in Iran is a paedophile so hes getting a lashing - who cares theres much worse going on.

Alcohol is also lethal in large enough doses. As for responsibility, thats a very subjective judgement which could be applied to alcohol right?

They should bring back public executions and such. I'd watch.

@ghost101: It already is applied to alcohol in which the government has taken the correct preventative measure to make it "lethal".

I think we should adopt some form of Shahria punishments like whipping. It would definitely act as a much larger deterrent than 3 months in prison....

That's not to say that I think we should have it for reasons like being gay in the slightest. Just change the sentences for our currently existing laws from prison/fine to whipping or death sentence.

we already had it - it was only in 1998 it was abolished. TBH I think they shouldnt have abolished it for crimes such as murder etc. But I think the actual execution should be done at least 5-10 years after prison and should be done humanely like a lethal injection or something less... disturbing.

Errr, no.

I don't want a law enforcement system similar to some backwards, misogynist God-fearing lunatic society that we see represented in Iran.

We didn't win WW2/have the feminist movement/have gay rights, etc. etc. just so we could turn around and beat people.

I agree with the death sentence bit. But disagree with the only having it for murder thing. The majority of crimes committed (guessing here, but it makes sense) are minor crimes like mugging/fighting. If there was a harsh sentence for these, such as 10 whips or something, people would be a lot less likely to do them imo. The costs outweigh the benefits really.

I know this doesn't hold true for death sentences for major crimes as people usually have a strong reason for killing someone.

Did you ever open your mind to the idea that not everything they do is wrong?

Does anybody know what this guy is judged to have done? It could be quite serious.

Personally, rather than having ASBOs, I would much rather have a public beating. Its quick, simple and the "bad boys" out there will seriously think about their actions whenever they look back at the scars left on their backs.

Plus they'll (and everyone else) realise they're as hard as they thought they were if they're seen crying on public TV...

O dear.........public whippings, are we not digressing here to pre enlightenment ethics on punishment. How about the percentage of people who are convicted who are innocent and then they recieve the punishement? What if it is you?

The death penalty does not decrease crime rights neither would publically whipping people like they did in the 15th century, crime still existed.

Our criminal justice system is far from perfect, prison does not always solve the problem and I believe they often harbour and increase criminal activity. However, I do not know the formula to create a crime free society, but punishing people by violence has never worked and it never will.

All i'm going to say is thankgod none of you are in power.

Plus, some states in America have the death penalty and look at the great job that does of preventing crime. Round about 12,000 gun murders in America annually (obviously that includes all states, those with and without the death penalty). But regardless, its clear in a country like America that social problems are to blame.

Killing a few people every year out of thousands isn't really going to make the damnedest bit of difference.

Lol what?

They're just like how this country was in Victorian Times. Pity they don't have equality like we do in Britain. Plus, I don't really see how hanging someone because they are gay, as part of your legal system comes across in any way shape or form as 'good' or 'progressive'.

Bet Elton John would love it over there.

Do you think that introducing the death penalty would increase crime rates?

No. But it would decrease them either.

Actually, in fact it could increase crime rates because if it was sanctioned you'd have riots on your hands.

People simply wouldn't tolerate the police or government being given the ability to kill you, whatever your crime.
