Get a Q9550 now or wait and get the E0 Q9550

Meh. :p

So I'd have to wait until Nehalem for some reductions in price? Or no point in waiting?

I wouldnt bother upgrading until just after nehalem tbh, by which time the E0 stepping should have come through. Maybe we will see a few drops then and get an idea of waht i7 is like :)

Not going to upgrade to Nehalem. I could wait until then to get a Q9550/P45 system running.

Any idea when Nehalem will hit the shelves so I can plan on buying then with a hoped for price reduction in C2Q gear?

So another 6 weeks or so? Can I really expect big price drops or should I buy when I get the money? :)

There won't be any "big" price drops....

Reports suggest that Intel will once again cut the cost of its desktop processors on October 19th 2008.
The restructured pricing will affect both Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors, with price cuts of up to $20. Intel's hugely-popular 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad Q6600 is expected to drop from $193 to $183, and the 2.3GHz Core 2 Quad Q8200 will take its place at $193 - down from $224.
On the dual-core front, Intel's 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo E7300 will fall from $133 to $113, and be joined by a new 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo E7400 part.
They aren't the biggest of price cuts, but we can expect Core 2 prices to continue dropping as Core i7 draws near. If you aren't planning a Core i7 upgrade this Christmas, it could be an opportune moment to pick up a Core 2 processor on the cheap.

Tell me about it, I called OCUK and was told that all q9550's in stock were E0 stepping so to double check I sent a webnote and got a completely different reply, basically saying they have no idea if they are in stock.
I will hold on to my money until I can be sure of what will be sold to me.
I would be happy if someone from OCUK would give any idea if they will ever know/ have some in stock so I know i'm not wasting my time waiting!!!

lol all this waiting for the Q9550 E0 stepping, you can get a Q9650 for only an extra £65 if you look in the right place, besides I'm sure most of you have been waiting weeks & weeks, surely giving you enough time to save an extra £50 to guranteee an E0 stepping.

Thats what I bought last week instead, can't be arrsed with waiting & waiting.

Errr, Q9550 is £234 and Q9650 is £381. Would love to know where you can find em for £280(ish). I mean while were at it, why not spend a little more and buy a QX9650!!! You can on like this until your spending £1000,000 on your rig. I appreciate what your saying but why spend more when you don't have to? Come on OCUK, throw us a frikin' bone!!! :p If I knew if it was going to be another 3-4 weeks I would probably buy a Q9650!

That sounds interesting although i've never seen a £250 Q9650

This was also my experience when I asked OcUK, I got 2 conflicting answers, so getting tired of waiting I just got the C1, which is quite happy @4.0GHz, I don't really think (from what I have seen), that a Q9550 E0 is going to clock much higher.

I would have gone for a Q9650 (being guaranteed an E0 stepping), but really was not willing to pay the extra....

I've edited the price i.e. extra £65 + price of Q9550 @ £235 = £300 for Q9650 (£80 cheaper than here).

Obviously I can't say anymore than that due to the fact the moderators will get excited at having something to do lol - infact it's not listed anymore. :(

Well sure but everyones moaning about wanting the Q9550, I was pretty fedup with waiting also, so bought a Q9650 for £65 more than the price of the Q9550.

People have been waiting like 6+ weeks which equates to just over £9 a week in cost terms - big deal. :)

Everybody hates to miss out on a deal and I am no exception! I know what your saying Nelly, and you are correct but I would feel like I had missed out if I bought a Q9650 tomorrow only for the E0 Q9550 to become available very soon after.
All I really want is some idea when they might be about and then I can make the choice if I want to wait or not.
Someone must have an idea????? please god.... someone!!!!

I wonder what every one is expecting from the E0 stepping to make the wait worth while, cause i really cant see it myself

The same as the B3 Q6600 and the G0 Q6600

Cooler running better overclocking chips.

a 24/7 4ghz 45nm quad is a very nice system.

It also seems (IIRC) that the gap between an average overclocking C2D and C2Q has reduced with the E0 stepping, so other than cost it starts to make the whole 'should I go quad or dual' debate more obvious to answer...

ps3ud0

Still aint convinced, somewhere in this thread someone posted a link to a EO overclocking thread on another forum, with the exception of 1 done of them could clock better than my C1 or me mates or for that matter the majority of the newer C1 chips that i have seen results for lately. Still think motherboards will be the limiting factor hat makes E0's not worth the wait but i guess we shall find out, one day...
