I've always wanted to speak Japanese, but I'm not sure the best way to go about it. Has anyone done this before and got any advice? Thanks.

I'm doing it at the moment :) (Well, have been for about 3 years, 2 years properly).

My advice is to start really simply.

1) I learnt hiragana + katakana from a book called Japanese for Busy People and playing this flash game : http://www.easyjapanese.org/kanaquiz.html ).

2) Get as much "media" as you can and immerse yourself in it - I listen to japanese music most days, I also got the "dummies" book and listened to the cd and read the book.

3) Get a japanese friend! I have a friend in japan now called Ayako, she is a sweety, and another girl in brighton called Yuumi, who is also a sweety and a complete babe. Hang out with them and chat! Learning a language is really cool and you will make lots of friends!!

4) Try lots of japanese stuff and ask what they are called!

5) Go on a course! I am on a part time course at Sussex University, great japanese guy teaching it, and having set structure and a group you can work with can be really motivating.

6) Set yourself some goals! What is it you actually want to achieve? What level of fluency? You want to be able to read a japanese newspaper? Its possible! Anything is possible...

Baka means idiot

That wasn't aimed at anyone its just one of the words I know.

watashi wa maxilive desu. I think that's right :P

I found a great DVD tutorial which was a lot like those classic school videos you used to watch where it plays out a basic scene all in Japanese then teaches you the phrases used.

See if there's a local university that does a module in Japanese. Will be taking one myself this year. When was at uni, one of my housemates did it and liked it, so figure this year got more time to do it.

Check out Helen Gilhooly's "Michel Thomas Method - Japanese Foundation". It's what I'm currently using and it's not bad at all.

Then there's http://www.yesjapan.com and hopefully sometime before the apocalypse http://www.japanesepod.com will get going.

There's load of Japanese TV shows to download on the net. I get some in HD from the newsgroups. I particularly loved watching Dream.5 which is a very tame version of UFC that they have. The guys are too polite to smack each other about!

Thanks guys. Very helpful information - I'm going to look into doing a class as I know it will keep me focused.

i thought japanese for hello was herro :p

lol i couldnt help but laugh at this :D

Courses are a good way to go tbh, The "Get a japanese friend" seems a bit dodgy imo but i suppose it could help. Suppose it depends on your age but i think it would seem very wierd to just go out "Japanese friend hunting"

I could find someone to talk Japanese to, that's not a problem. My friend has been working in Japan for 2 years as an English teaching assistant and has a Japanese Wife.

My japanese, even after three years, is still very basic :S

So for example I can say

Kesa densha de kaisha ni kimashita. (This morning, I came into work by train). I can construct simple sentences but nothing serious yet. I have only learnt a couple of verb structures, and my kanji is extremely weak (I know about 20-30 max). Reading is slow and laborious.

go to japan and teach english

all you need is a degree and a teaching qualification that you do online

when you are there you can take any number of japanese classes

My friend is currently doing this and loves it. Unfortunately I have a good job and a lovely girlfriend to consider now so I doubt I will do this.

hmmm...you need a good reason if you are going to learn a new language

the fact is most people will give up after a while

id say go on holiday there with your gf and then think about what you want next
