With all the doom and gloom I'm looking at moving to HSBC as a new bank as I believe the service at Halifax will shortly fall off a cliff. Anyone got any recommendations?

No I haven't got more than £35k in the bank :(

First Direct. Been with them for 15 years and no complaints at all.

All phone and internet, can get a decision for everything over the phone, and all the staff are in the UK and more importantly usually know what they are talking about!

Customer service has always been good at HSBC, both current account and business banking.

+1 for the Cooperative Bank

Been with them for the past couple of years and their customer service is fantastic while their ethical policy means I know my money isn't being invested in things like guns

HSBC invest in samurai swords and killer ninjas and stuff, probably because they are from over that way :)

I bank with Smile (part of the Co-Op), I've been with them for the past 5 years and am happy enough with them.

I've had or used online banking with a few banks, and IMO theirs is better than most, even if it is bright pink. :)
I've had to call them a few times, always a UK call centre and have dealt with my query well enough.

Their rates aren't as good as they were a few years ago (compared to other banks), but I don't have enough money to worry about how much interest I earn, :p

Surely it's behaviour like this that makes banks fold?

I mean a bank isn't doing well, so instead of sticking it out, everyone is removing their funds and custom from the bank, pushing them further into debt.

I've been with HSBC for about 15 years, and Halifax for about 3, and I'm not closing my Halifax account or removing money from it.

a lot of people here recommending REALLY small banks, i'm not sure thats a good idea ?

I think Lloyds are looking strong atm, but who knows from one day to another..

Oh, and ethical banking, thats really funny, could not care less if what my money is invested in is ethical.. as long as I get me moolah back :)

First Direct are part of HSBC.

Co-op is part of the Co-operative Society which is not a listed company AFAIK so should be immune to the latest situations where a run on the share price, rather than the bank caused the issues

It's not our fault that they've over exposed themselves. Service is surely going to go down hill if they've got issues
