in the arse of england.
was coming up to a set of lights that changed on me at the last moment, had two choices, skid to a halt or continue so i continued. received a letter today stating intention to prosecute.

anyone know what the penalty is for this these days ? haven't had one of these before, beyond the odd parking ticket i don't have much experience with this stuff.

This has happned to me before, it is 3 points and £60

Bloody police, that £60 probably went straight into their Christmas party fund :o

The thing is, when it happned to me, the light must have *just* gone to Red as I crossed the white lane.

But the problem was that there was a massive 7tonne truck behind me that was going at a fair speed (this is traffic lights on a 50mph road  ) so there was no way I could slam my brakes in time else he would have gone into the back of me - but the police didnt seem to care about that

They changed on you at the last minute? Isn't there that amber light thingy on there? Hmm?

there is but when your on a country lane doing 60mph, its late at night with no traffic, and wet, its bloody hard to stop in 20 feet on wet tarmac without skidding. I tend not to slow down to 30 for each set of lights.

well, you should do, or accept the consequences for when you do something wrong.

using what exactly? The force?

Some lights change up from yellow to red in a very short space of time.

Unlucky to the OP but it's just one of those things...

Is there some unwritten rule that allows taxi drivers and late night busses to run red lights after 10pm lol. Theres a crossroads in Burnley and every time i pull up to a red light there at night a bus or taxi just goes straight through.

I went through a red recently too.

On a 50mph dual carriageway and it was peeing down. Lights changed to red as I was about 5 metres away so I could either brake, end up in the middle of the crossroad or continue.

Luckily I don't think there are any cameras there :)

but they do set the timing of the lights so that it stays amber a lot long on a 50mph road than a 30mph road to give you time to stop, they set it up for the speed limt/time to stop etc.

The problem comes when your not doing the speed limt and dont have time to stop (hey we all do it) but going faster means you need to think faster and stop quicker.

If you are approaching and can see the light well in advance, its common sense to slow down . But this being on the country lane, probably unlikely to be the case. What did the truck behind do?

If the lights have been on green for a period of time, you are supposed to be ready to stop just incase they change as you get close.

Its a good idea to slow down, or at least lift off the accellerator and be ready to slow the car down if the lights do change :)
