Student wins lottery and wants to buy...

I really should start doing the lottery :(.

I bet she just wants something small and easy to drive, maybe she learned in one, who knows. I'm sure in a couple of years after getting used to the fact shes loaded she will get a 911 or something.

She won't get a Ford Ka anyway. A brand new Ka will be the car she wanted before she won the lottery. She'll go the Ford dealership, sit in something with leather seats, air con and all the rest of it and think "I can afford this", and buy that instead. She might even decide to have a look at the BMW Mini garage across the street after seeing what she could get for a few grand more in the Ford garage.

Tbh its pointless going to uni for her now, sack that all off start up a company in something she loves and make even more money.

If I had 7 mill in the bank, i'd still go to university. The experience was great, and if I could do it without the worry of money it would be even better.

Where else (other than the army!) do you get to hang out with so many like minded people at the age of 18 without many worries? Uni is great, being able to do it without the worry of money or indeed even prospects would be even greater.

Totally this ^^

For someone who's got 7 million in the bank its going to be hell, the first mistake she's made is making herself national news for winning, she will never be treated correctly and you won't actually know who your friends are in the future.

If i won the lottery and i needed a new cooker, i would go and buy one that is the right size, fits in my kitchen and didnt cost and arm and a leg. A chef however might go and buy a £10,000 cooker.

See, now I wouldn't. I'd research what I could, and buy something that is known to be of a decent quality, long-lasting, and highly regarded.

Regardless of it being something I am "interested in".

Secondly, I wouldn't want to risk my wellbeing in something as shoddy as a Ford Ka, even if I had no interest in motors. A fiesta (whilst not being something I'd buy) for example would be better in every conceivable way.

This may be true, but she is not a car enthusiast and is buying what she wants.

More like what she wanted before she was a millionaire. Now she's got money, she'll probably realise that there are other nice, small cars out there that are far better, cars which would have been out of her budget previously.

Totally agree with this, as well.

EVERY SINGLE THING I'd purchase from then on would be properly researched, and absolutely of the finest possible quality within my new massive budget. Just like I do with anything currently, only with more money :)

Well, she is the one spending the money and she will buy what she wants. She probably likes how it looks, and has asked her friends, and they probably own one too. So she is doing what she thinks is best for her.

Why are we so bothered, its not like she is a member we can offer opinions to and discuss merits, its a random bint who won the lottery and is being quoted about a purchase she has probably not even thought about in any detail.

:)

Wouldn't it be ironic if just after this windfall there was a major default (like an unrescued AIG) in the Credit Derivatives market. The resulting domino like wave of failures would wipe out her money before she has a chance to spend any of it. Well she might get to keep £35K :o

Not that I'd want this as it would also wipe out the economy and all of our savings too..

Agreed, if I was her I would refuse to let the national lottery publically announce it. Despite the enormous amount of really nice and genuine people there are at uni, there are also a lot of vain, shallow people, and she is really going to struggle to make proper friends. Basically she is going to have to either get very lucky with her group of friends or hang around with similarly wealthy people. I inherited some money in the summer and have noticed that some people at uni, even those I would consider close friends, resent me sometimes because I can (within reason) buy what I want and don't have to struggle like most students.

wow i'm going to start playing the lottery now. been thinking about that for a while now, and for the sake of a quid it's probably worth just doing one a week for fun.

As everyone has been saying, you're interested in what you're interested in. Some people are interested in cars, some boats, some houses. Some people are just interested in being interested and researching about everything. I used to be the latter and research EVERYTHING i bought, now i just don't have the time/don't care.

For example; i'm a computer science student so surely when i just bought my new laptop a few months ago i should have been all over the web and researched on the latest technology and read a million review right?
Well nope i didn't do that, i went on apple.com and bought the first macbook i saw. Infact i think i spent a week considering a macbook air and then realised that i wanted a dvd drive so i bought the macbook. And that's in my related field. Cars are a different story for me as i really ENJOY researching and reading about them.

It's no shock to me she said she wants a ford ka, but realistically she'll go to a dealer who will spout some rubbish and she'll buy something with leather in it that looks 'cute'. Yet i bet when she goes looking for hair straighteners she'll go and find out which are the best.

I'd have a Ka for the odd trip back to the country, no one will touch it while I'm in the South of France... chillin'. :p

Actually thinking about it i don't think I'd go out and buy something too fast if i won the lottery tomorrow. I think I'd buy many cars starting off with a car that I'd love to own now (Integra DC5) and then move up as and when i get bored. Not really into comfort so no Bentleys etc for me.

She was probably adamant on buying one before she had the money, and now she's suddenly got it, she knows she can buy it. She'll realise soon though that she can have pretty much any car she wants, and I'm willing to bet she won't buy a Ka.

I'd go and buy a Skyline and a ZR1 and race them around the ring repeatedly, maybe getting a washed out or ex Formula one driver in on the deal, to settle an argument :p
