Ive currently got an E4300 Allendale (which I have had for about 18 months) and have been considering upgrading CPU and Motherboard.

Would the 5200 or 2200 chips be much faster for gaming/general windows operation than the 4300 I have already ?

I would considering getting (for a budget of around £130)

Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3 Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £59.99
(£70.49) £59.99
(£70.49)

Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.50GHz (800FSB) - Retail £49.99
(£58.74) £49.99
(£58.74)

Any advice would be appreciated - haven't upgraded the PC for a while and feel a bit "out of the loop". :)

If you can hold fire a few more days i am in the process of benching a E4300, E5200 and E6600 at stock, 3Ghz, 3.6Ghz (3.4Ghz for the E4300 as that's it's max) and whatever the E5200 tops out with. I am running about 20 different benchies, both synthetic and games but it is taking longer than i thought which is why i said a few more days. I am also throwing in Q6600 at stock, 3.2Ghz and 3.6Ghz and a few E8500 @ 4.2Ghz results for good measure. All testing is done in the rig in my siggy for a good comparison. The results should be quite interesting. When i am done i will be sticking the E5200 in my bargain £35 P35 biostar board to se how far i can get it on a Freezer 7 Pro. I am hoping to post my results possibly on Friday but more likely on Sunday.

The E2200 would be a backwards step as it is the same 65nm process with only 1MB L2 cache compared to your E4300's 2mb. Not sure about the E5200 which is why i am doing these test's.

I will be very interested to read that. Sometimes i look at CPUs but I don't think I would get my money's worth for gaming.

How are the benchmarks going ?

Done them all but the E5200. Idiots sent the wrong cpu for crying out loud (not OCUK). They assure me the replacement will be with me tomorrow. What i have found so far is that some games respond to cpu overclocking better than others by as much as 74fps!!! There are big variations in the synthetics too. I should still have it up by Sunday though.

Yesterday was freezing up here. I had cpu idle temps of 5 degrees and load temps of 17 degrees. :D

"OH WTH!! They sent me a QX9770!! I'm going to send this right back and let them know how incompetent they are!!!"

Hehe :)

The E5200 still has'nt turned up yet so unless it comes in the next 4hrs the results will not be up before Tuesday at the earliest. :( I was looking forward to playing with one as well. :(

Just to keep you up to date. As i expected, it did'nt arrive. First thing Monday morning i shall be on the phone to them to find out what the hell is going on. I am very dissapointed and shall never be using that retailer again.

I am very sorry for the delay guys. I know some of you are waiting for my results before deciding where to go next.

Oh it did turn up. Just the wrong cpu!! They sent me a E2140 instead of the E5200 i paid for. I did get a free upgrade on my speakers as the Logitech X-530's were out of stock (no live stock display either) so they upgraded me to the X-240's but that's not the point. I want my E5200 as i want something new to play with and i am letting a lot of people down now as well. :(

Well it still has'nt arrived. Phoned them up and they are blaming City Link now. They said it will be here tomorrow but they have said that twice before so i take that with a pinch of salt. If it does'nt come tomorrow i will be telling them to stick it and refund me. I will then get one from elsewhere on next day delivery for Thursday. Either way i will probably not be posting my results until the weekend. Sorry guys.
