New Bank - Halifax leaving

I'm nervous about HBOS as my current account is there, and I won't be in the country to deal with it if things really hit the fan... I'm wondering whether to open up a current account elsewhere in case.

I know in reality HBOS is unlikely to be allowed to go under, but who knows??

First Direct have been brilliant for me, used them for years. Always have a good laugh with them on the phone, really friendly service. :)

I thought HBOS are being taken over by Lloyds TSB to form the biggest bank in the UK. Won't that make an account with the Halifx more secure if anything?

The problem is that people aren't sure if this is going ahead. HBOS' share prices have dropped so LloydsTSB might not want to pay the agreed price.

Seen as though they have M&A consultants already defining the terms, I am sure it is going ahead.

Also, Lloyds TSB aren't paying any money for HSBOS - and Lloyd's share prices have fallen too.

dont bank with HSBC they will screw you over plus worst service ever, I just moved to Natwest from hsbc

Out of the frying pan into the fire, HSBC are useless and have utterly useless customer service staff in Bangalore but Natwest are far worse and tend to employ people are completely clueless.

Try Nationwide - it is still a building society and is probably the most stable well run national 'bank' there is in the market today.

I believe the service at Halifax will shortly fall off a cliff.

Just out of interest, what makes you think Halifax is doomed; I’ve not really been keeping up with the current situation, other than watching the news, but don’t recall anything about them?

Scort.

paid £200 in cash to natwest on a saturday in the machine still wasnt showing by the wednesday, called the Branch and money was found and added to my account within hours. Had a similar experience with HSBC many years ago as have been with them for 12 years and had to call Deli and it took them 10 days to find my cash. HSBC are also useless when you go into the branch unless you want to borrow money, if you have problems all they will offer you is a high interest loan to be repaid over the next 50 years, utterly useless

Natwest have always been good for me. Can't say I need a great deal of service but their online banking is good, and I've never had a problem with them

Sent me a new card recently as well....before the expiry date with a new security chip, old card still works though, will have to transfer everything accross...

I'm with hsbc.
And they're brilliant, I was with nationwide for years and their service and policies are shocking, they lost my custom.
Only thing I don't like is the debit card, it's fugly, so boring and dull.
