Is there any card better than two 8800GT's in SLI?

Hi, after buying my 8800GT last Christmas i'm up for an upgrade, especially since Crysis Warhead has come out!:)

I have the option to buy another 8800GT and put the two in SLI mode which i assume will give me twice as much power for most games?

Are there any recently released or up and coming cards from Nvidia or ATI which will give me better performance than 2 8800GT's, if so by how much?

I don't mind waiting a few months for something new if it gives me say, 3X the performance of a 8800GT. My budget is around £200.

As you can guess i am a little out of touch with recent developments!

Thanks.

in most games a single 4870 will be better for a few reasons

sli compatability is not required

micro-stuttering wont be present

Instead of 2 8800's, you can buy an 260, and use the 8800 as an PhysX card.

Personally I would flog the 8800 and put the money towards an 4870. I have just gone from an BFG 8800 to an Gainward 4870. Loving the new ATi card :)

Thanks for the info
Is there anything forthcoming from Nvidia that will offer huge performance gains over today's cards? I don't mind waiting 6 months even.

Does SLI mode give exactly 2 times the power in most cases? Would i get over 20000 points in 3dmark06? ( i get around 11000 with my 8800GT at the moment)
I heard somewhere you might get less than a 50% gain, this has put me off so far.

I've just stopped using SLi to buy a single better card. You will not get 100% more from SLI, remember it's only another GPU you would need double of everthing to do that.

SLi is ok in some games but I think it's better to have one good card it also puts more strain on your CPU, Team Fortress 2 runs better on my machine with one card the it does with two.

Sli'ing does not give double the performance. it really depends on the game, but GT's sli really nicely in most, and it would be great if you could find a really cheap one somewhere.

though google some benchmarks to see exactly the difference between the GT, SLI and GTX 260

Thanks for all the info.:)

I take it 2x 512MB 8800GT's in SLI will not be the same as a similar 1GB card?

To play crysis warhead with maximum settings at high resolutions i take it a 512MB card will struggle to render the textures?

the question to aask is this.. he says his budget is 200 quid ..now we know u can get an 8800gt for 80 quid .... i'd say the performance per pound ratio on spending 200 notes doesnt justify the extra 120 extra .... the 8800gt is fine card ... might as well get the other as its so cheap

Good point

I can tell you that crysis did see a big slice of Sli performance on my rig.

8800GT SLI runs nicely - theres no noticeable micro-stutter on my setup atleast and performance wise it better than the 280GTX and 4870 in most cases, pretty much all current game titles support SLI fine and typical gains are around 60-70+% over a single card with some games very close to double the performance of a single card.

The only setup that is definatly better is the 4870X2. Although I just added a 260 GTX to my collection (216sp) and thats out performing the 8800GT SLI when overclocked (the SLI setup is overclocked too) tho not by a big margin.

Same experiences here. Just been putting 8800GT SLI through it's paces and have so far seen an almost double framerate improvement in GRID, both minimum and average, Crysis absolutely flies and Call of Duty is the exact same story.

For £60 delivered, there simply wasn't and isn't a better option. Especially as spending £200 will get you nothing faster.

sorry if slightly off topic but if a 3870 is similar to a 8800gt would I see similar performance with 3870 xfire?

ouch, that's one hell of a difference. although I read crysis is more optimised for Nvidia. guess it will have to be a 3870x2 with my 3870 if I want to hold onto it :(
