Hi all,

I'm signed up to Virgin 20Mb service and my modem (ntl 250) is linked directly to my PC via ethernet cable.

Yet does anyone have any reasonable clue as to why the following situation exists:

- I generally download stuff (like CorelDraw from download.com) at around 40 to 100 KBps. http://www.pbupload.com/data/500/shittyconnection.JPG
- An online speedtest says im downloading at 1.9MBps (http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1222814695&v=5168265)

It's been like that since I first got the new connection about 6 months ago.

download.com probably has a speed cap to how much one ip address can download at a time.
have you ever been able to download something at higher than 100kb/sec?

look for mirrors for your downloads ;) download.com caps your speed cuz i'm sure they have 1000+ ip's downloading at the same time so they can't give you full speed ;) try downloading game demo from gamershell.com uk mirror ;) i get best speed with my virgin 10mb lane

The Fifa 09 demo downloads at 600KBps, which is perfectly fine to be honest. I've never seen it that fast before.

Then again, I just tried downloading another random large file (Americas Army for Mac - http://www.macgamefiles.com/download.php?item=17749&title=America's+Army+2.5+Full+(http)) and the speed here again was about 80KB.

So, is this normal?

What makes gamershell so special?

download.com is the worst download mirror there is. I refuse to download from them at all.

Gamershell is my preferred download site too.

Basically uncapped.

yes this is normal. think of it as you are downloading a file from another persons pc through their internet connection, but their internet connection has a limit too. in essence this is exactly what is happening, download sites only have a certain download bandwidth available, and remember it is probably being used by hundreds of people at the same time :D

That's a kick in the nuts. So basically there's not much point with an uberfast connection if you're only going to get those speeds on 2% of the websites you visit.

i wouldn't say that, theres lots of websites that offer fast download speeds, but most widely available ones like download.com are widely used by everyone. you just got to do a bit of surfing to find one on that uberfast connection :D
if it makes any consolation i'm jealous of you! i can only get 8mb

So the main difference between download.com and gameshell is this "mirroring" business?

The more I think about it, the more disappointing it is. We need an Internet revolution.

i'm sure softpedia have the same software and have at least one working mirror and i get 1100kb+ from them on my 10mb line

use better sites

you can get torrents for legal things too you know!

softpedia is generally slow, but has a good selection. majorgeeks is usually decent
