Am I CPU limited?

Hey,

Playing Day of Defeat Source on the spec in sig (single core Opteron 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM, 7900GT stock, Vista x64) and I'm getting pretty poor fps playing online. Dips to 30fps frequently (moreso if the server has more players) and averages about 50fps, regardless of whether I am playing at 1024, 1280 or 1600. Playing single player Source games such as HL2, I get much more stable frame rates.

So it seems I am CPU limited right? However, before this card I was using an 8800GTS and the fps was a lot more stable and 60+ especially at lower resolutions...

So, do I need a new PC? :p

Cheers,

Suman

well the 8800GTS is a lot better then the 7900GT, so you problem could be your GPU, especially if the rest of your system was not changed

I'd say it for the graphics card to be honest, the 8800gt is considerably faster than the 7900gt.

Hmm ok... you guys are tempting me to pull the trigger on a GTX260 :D

(The 8800GTS has gone into my LAN PC build btw, hence the temporary downgrade)

I wouldnt go for a GTX260 with a single core 2.8Ghz.. I'd wait till you can get an overall system upgrade, up to a Core2duo or quad, DDR2 memory

Also I've found source games (well TF2, havent played DODS for ages) more CPU dependant than others. Its the only game to 'crash to desktop' with a unstable CPU OC, where as Crysis would run all day....

Your not cpu limited your everything limited :P

I had a 7900gt on an old rig changed the cooler on it & oced it without problems

£20 vs £100 :P

GTX 260 in the machine now, and fps in DoD are still horrible :(

But it seems my CPU is performing crap? From internet benchmarks, the FX55 (2.6GHz) gets 180fps in Valve Stress Test at 800x600.... my 2.8Ghz Opty is struggling to get 130fps at 640x480. Only difference being my OS (Vista x64). All this started when I put that sodding 7900GT back in my comp, lol.

Thinking about doing a reformat...

I don't think the valve stress test is multithreaded, so the fact it is single core doesnt matter. 2GB RAM is fine. The opteron being clocked at 2.8ghz should mean it performs similar to an x2 5000+ in single threaded games (dont think am2 improved much on performance right?). So go on from there.

Also the valve stress test does perform worse in Vista.

Run Rivatuner, (I have it running at boot-up by default), play the game for at least ten minutes, then check rivatuner afterwards to see your cpu useage. If it's running at 100% then you are cpu limited.

You can also run rivatuner statistics server and get the readings in real-time, on-screen, whilst playing the game.

OP: I would suggest picking up a second hand 8800GT / 8800GTX or soemthing on the MM - they are coming up all the time.

even with a dual core opty at 2.8 i was CPU limited with 9600gt sli

some games did not even seem different when i added a second gfx card

got my q6600 and my system now feels a lot more balanced with more even scores in 3dmark06

my advice go intel with at least a decent dual core

I was gonna say, my 7600GT handles CSS fine at almost max settings and so i would assume a 7900GT would handle DODS easily. I've heard source games are very CPU intensive so i would certainly lean towards that.

A new system may be in order :D

It doesnt make sense why he'd get worse performance than his 8800gts given his system is the same.
