My workmate has just passed his test and is after a car for running back and forth to work for a maximum of £1k

He doesn't really have any requirements, just something that won't be ridiculous on fuel, insurance and maintenance I guess

Any ideas?

Deffo not a fiesta then, i'd look into the 1.6 / 2.0 P11 Primera, the GT, SI or SRI can be had for under 1k now i'm driving a P11 this week and its such good fun down the backroads.

*for a car of its size.....

If he is actually getting to 70mph along that stretch then he is looking at a 30 - 40 mins, is this suddenly too long in a fiesta? i would have thought it would be perfectly fine.

I'm driving my other halfs 1.4 T reg Zetec fiesta on an 80 mile round trip and it's perfect. My Leon Cupra is miles better but she now drives that on a 6 mile round trip..

Much cheaper on fuel, but I miss the grunt.

Sounds pretty rough on the Cupra, infact I wouldn't want mine to be doing that. Also, the fiesta, "perfect", I doubt it.

I'd be using the cars the other way round, regardless of the extra fuel costs, well either that or getting rid of the Cupra for a derv.

I drove the Cupra last week.

I won't buy a car on credit so it'll be a long save for something else.

Long term wise job paying the same close to home...

Cupra is an 03 plate with Revo, various bits done and on 80k so worth bugger all.. £3k tops.. Regularly serviced at JKM, but that's for my piece of mind etc.

For under £1000 car buying is an absolute lottery really. It will be so old it could have any number of problems, regardless of marque. Best thing to do is make sure you do all the usual checks prior to purchasing. If it breaks chances are it will be cheapest to just buy another anyway. If I had to pick Fiesta or Mondeo are obvious choices though.

Find someone you know who works in the trade? My other half's uncle owns a garage so I may get something cheaper off him and give the fiesta back to my other half and leave the Cupra on the drive for the weekend. Then save up for something nice.

well he's now saying he has decided to up his budget to 2k, any further suggestions? Thanks for the suggestions so far

At this price, mechanical condition and forthcoming parts replacement/servicing schedules is everything rather than the make/model.

But I'd go for 306/Xsara.

You have made over 2,000 posts and you don't know the answer?

I don't know anything about "sensible" cars in this price range, if i had my way I'd just tell him to get a polo G40 :D

P.S. from the ones he's been firing at me, he seems to be preferring the idea of a hatchback
