4870 Vortexx cooling

Got myself a nice vortexx cooler on my 4870, but remember people saying about covering up voltage or memory bits with some extra heatsinks, can somebody explain? Something like this?
 
they mean cover the vrm chips.. yes Something like this

but tbh u don't really need too. the vortexx cooler cools the chips without any heatsinks on the vrm.

i don't have anything on my vrm.

Vortexx Neo is a new VGA cooler designed for hi-performance, low noise and stunning looks. It is a perfect upgrade for noisy and boring stock coolers.
Two long U-shape copper heatpipes help to transfer the heat from the large 62 x 62mm copper base to 33 bonded aluminium fine fins. A solid aluminium plate with a surface area of 45cm removes the heat from the RAM chips.
Thanks to the smart airflow, Vortexx Neo provides high thermal performance with much improved acoustic levels. An akasa design 80mm lo-noise fan draws cool air from the case through the coolers fins and exhausts the heated air out of the case rear panel. The innovative design directs some of the airflow to cool board components including the VGA voltage regulators, it is crucial for graphics performance and stability to keep these components within thermal operating parameters.

VORTEXX Neo is SLI and CrossFire compatible and is designed to optimize the performance of NVIDIA and ATI VGA hi- end cards. It has an acoustic performance at 2500 RPM of 1.0 Sone, whilst delivering an incredible cooling performance of 0.36ºC/W, most stock VGA coolers can only approach that thermal level at 4500 RPM fan speed which produces much more noise.

Hmm, well just a bit worried as I don't want to kill them off too quickly. Am just about to buy a printer so was thinking about chucking them in. Thanks!
 
well i been running mine for about 2months without anything on the vrms...

even on they site and installation manual doesn't say u need to put anything on the vrms
 
I just got mine running at full speed, can't hear it over my antec 550 earth watts power supply (which will be replaced around xmas with nehalem)
 
My previous 4870 would get to about 130 on the vrm's and freeze when i had the vortex on. Eventually it was really unstable but that might have been me playing around with bios's ;)

Got my replacement card now and haven't bothered putting the vortex back on yet due to this.glad this post came up!

For those of you who haven't put heatsinks on the vrm's have you overclocked your cards?
 
I just received one of these today for my 4850. Haven't had chance to test it too much yet, but does seem to have dropped my temps by a decent ammount though.

Although there is a heat sink on the back of my card (link) that was just slightly too big to get the vortex on, so I just quickly unclipped it & took a couple of mm off the top of the HS with my dremmel.

I also made a little converter cable so I have the vortex fan plugged into the graphics card.
 
Will probably try the vortex on my replacement card tonight then once i finally get in from work! :(

Hopefully it will be stable this time around.

A few posts up (sorry on my phone so tricky doing quotes etc) how did you make the converter cable?haven't looked at doing that before but i'm using all the fan headers on my board so would be really handy to do!
 
The stock fan on my GPU had a little extension cable on it. I had a spare connector in my bits box that would plug into it. Also had a 3 pin fan extension cable lying around.

Stripped down the connector that I needed, Clipped the extension cable to a short length & rebuild the connector with the wire from the extension.

I have a piccie of the extension cable as I've been taking a load of photos for a build log today. Will post it up when I've got it off the camera

Once it was all assembled, the cable was braided to keep it tidy
