Which version of Windows

I am currently upgrading my PC and I am doing it gradually (first bumb is from 4GB to 6GB Ram, and will be adding an extra 2GB in the next week or so).

Would I be better running Windows XP 64bit or Vista 64bit?

Have you used both in the past? If so just use which ever you like best!

with 6GB (why 6GB btw? overkill? and surely you'd go to 8GB for dual channel?) both will run fine.

Edit, i miss read your post. You'll be going 8GB eventually.

The reason for 6GB is because I could only afford a 4GB kit so replacing 2 x 1GB sticks with 2 x 2GB and then hopefully replacing the other 2GB's in the next week or 2.

The reason for so much RAM is because I will be running dual displays with a VM in one display running Linux (or Mac OSX - not decided yet)
 
I find 8gb to be faster on an x64 system.. I'm wondering if this is to do with the physical addressing.

My question is, is running 4GB under an x64 system identical to running 2GB on an x86 system, because the addressing of an x64 is double? If this is the case, 8GB would be beneficial would it not?

When I went from 4gb to 8gb, the key differences I noticed were prefetching (exiting and entering applications was instant with no hard drive thrashing) and I can run endless amounts of apps. IE still have a memory problem I notice if you have say 25 IE windows with loads of tabs in each (it seems to go crazy), I guess this is something to do with 32 bit apps and how they address memory.
