Well I just received a BFG GTX 260 OC MAXCORE (for my cuda devbox) and thought it would be rude not to run a few benchmarks/games before it gets dragged down in the name of science :p
So how will it stack up against my current 4850 at 1920*1200?

Rig.
Asus P5K vanilla (note: A PCIe 2.0 slot mobo should get better results)
E8400 @ 3.8Ghz
3gb Corsair 8500 dominator
Vista home premium 32bit

Drivers:
Ati Cat 8.9, Nvidia 178.13
Both driver sets installed/uninstalled without any problems.

Usual GPU-Z SS (wow look at the 260's die size!)

The high cpu score represents the use of PhysX on the 260.

Only the 4850 (780/1100) had a full 32 man server for the FRAPS test. So the minimum and average fps will go down slightly on the 260 and stock 4850 results under similar conditions.

Its worth noting how cool both cards run at stock speeds. The GTX 260 idles at 42? and doesn't go above 69?, even after a full Crysis session! While the 4850 (using a zalman vf900) matches this by idling at 39? and hitting the low 60?s under load. However the 4850 peaks at 82? when overclocked to 780MHz. Surprisingly case temps stay the same even though the 260 vents hot air out the case.

Subjectively the GTX 260 did feel much smoother and more stable in most games (as the fps graphs show) but as a casual gamer I feel the 4850 is more than good enough, even at 1920*1200. Most games will run a solid 60fps under Vsync and games like crysis are surprisingly close (I don't mind turning down a few options either) But the 260 maxcore is a very good, cool running, card which I would recommend to any enthusiast gamer looking for smooth HD performance, fan noise isn't an issue either. It should o/c very well too but this ones being kept at stock atm :)

Cheers.

Ps,
I know its a rather pointless review but this is the first time I've got 2 cards of the same generation :D

Good effort sarge78! :)

Two extra things that play an important part in the selection process for me are . . . a) Price and b) Power Consumption

HIS ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3

£112.79 inc

+£63.45

Leadtek GeForce GTX 260 896MB GDDR3

£176.24 inc

From a price vs performance point of view why would anyone consider anything else other than a Radeon HD4850?

Would have been great if you measured the system power draw during your tests also, I would be keen to see how much juice the GTX260 draws at full whack?

At the price point of £175 you should be really comparing the nVidia card to a Radeon HD4870! :D

^^ big wayne that's not even the new 216 shaders version though is it which is still £235 on OCUK. Might as well crossfire 2 4850pro for that price.

Nice mini review but at that price point you should be comparing the 4850pro with 9800GT/GTX+ really.

Nice review i think most of those games run a lot better on nvidia cards but i also think the extra mem and bandwidth of the 260 is showing through at that resolution.

Thanks for that, nice mini review.

Did either of you read WHY he was able to do the mini review? I swear people have selective reading here at times...

Thanks for the review, interesting results. I'm thinking of an upgrade to a GTX260 myself (from an 8800GT) - this has given me food for thought ...

No such thing as a 4850 pro... :p

Price wise you'd be mad to get a GTX260 216 over 4850 crossfire, much better performance for less money, should be a no-brainer,

Yeah price and performance per watt are 2 key elements for me too. I should be getting a mains monitor soon so might add an extra chart soon. Techpowerup seem to have decent figures in the gfx reviews so I usually trust those guys.

Oh btw.. the title should read 'Useless mini review' :o

If anything, it just shows how well ATi are competing with NV, especially on a price to performance ratio. I wouldn't say it was useless though, that's a bit harsh.

Given the science aspect of why you've bought the 260, perhaps you could also state points per day per card? Assuming you have bought it for folding?

I'm referring to the number of times that the terms "price to performance" and "bang for buck" get thrown around these days.

That's is because not everyone can afford the fastest card going.
And what tents to happen is that people will say buy ths make because this make is the market leader i, but that does not mean they will also be the leader in the mid & low end but that gets over looked & a person can walk away with less for his money purely because at that price point the competing make had better performance.
