Well I just received a BFG GTX 260 OC MAXCORE (for my cuda devbox) and thought it would be rude not to run a few benchmarks/games before it gets dragged down in the name of science
So how will it stack up against my current 4850 at 1920*1200?
Rig.
Asus P5K vanilla (note: A PCIe 2.0 slot mobo should get better results)
E8400 @ 3.8Ghz
3gb Corsair 8500 dominator
Vista home premium 32bit
Drivers:
Ati Cat 8.9, Nvidia 178.13
Both driver sets installed/uninstalled without any problems.
Usual GPU-Z SS (wow look at the 260's die size!)
The high cpu score represents the use of PhysX on the 260.
Only the 4850 (780/1100) had a full 32 man server for the FRAPS test. So the minimum and average fps will go down slightly on the 260 and stock 4850 results under similar conditions.
Its worth noting how cool both cards run at stock speeds. The GTX 260 idles at 42? and doesn't go above 69?, even after a full Crysis session! While the 4850 (using a zalman vf900) matches this by idling at 39? and hitting the low 60?s under load. However the 4850 peaks at 82? when overclocked to 780MHz. Surprisingly case temps stay the same even though the 260 vents hot air out the case.
Subjectively the GTX 260 did feel much smoother and more stable in most games (as the fps graphs show) but as a casual gamer I feel the 4850 is more than good enough, even at 1920*1200. Most games will run a solid 60fps under Vsync and games like crysis are surprisingly close (I don't mind turning down a few options either) But the 260 maxcore is a very good, cool running, card which I would recommend to any enthusiast gamer looking for smooth HD performance, fan noise isn't an issue either. It should o/c very well too but this ones being kept at stock atm
Cheers.
Ps,
I know its a rather pointless review but this is the first time I've got 2 cards of the same generation
