Virgin to Increase speed for free

Should work fine - I just tried it and I got in...

I normally just go to 192.168.100.1 in the address bar - maybe try IE...

Thats all i can see. Theres a page to adjust the Frequency. Should i put that value in there?

Hmm can't see a operational page. Is my modem too old and has outdated firmware?

What modem do you have?

Try just going to the initial page - http://192.168.100.1 - login (root/root) and normally it would be under operational config as mr_k said...

If there isnt one, erm try and see if any of the pages mention Maximum Downstream Data Rate

I have a Motorala Surfboard SB4100. When I click that link it leads me straight into the software page without any password. I've looked through the pages and have yet to find 'Maximum Downstream Data Rate'

Is there a page which states whether my modem is capable of supporting the upgrade?

Just checked this page - http://allyours.virginmedia.com/cgi-bin/formactions/uplift_customer.pl

It says with the Large package 4mb-10mb upgrade my modem will be fine. Hmm now i'm confused.

Ye been on that page just now. Doesn't bode well with that software. Can only change the frequency and the upstream ID from 1-3. Do replacements cost a lot? I'm annoyed that they even charge me really considering I didn't break it or anything, its just old!

You actually don't need a modem upgrade.
We've looked at your current modem specification and it'll deliver the new speed perfectly.
Good one!

Ive not looked into it but I suspect your modem supports the lion share of 10Mbit - my suggestion would be to call up and say you are interested in BB XL but as you havent got a supported modem theres no point and see if theyll send you a new one. Just make sure they dont upgrade until you call up after installing it ;):p

sb4100 theoritcally suports 38mb but its cpu is weak so it doesnt even handle 20.

get a modem upgrade. you will probably get a scientific atlanta 2100 ( WebSTAR EPC2100R2) as replacement
your recieve power level is far to high btw, if you know how to use newsgroups

post saying you never get much faster than 12mbit and you think its because your modem is old.
ask if your power levels are okay and just copy/paste all the text on the page that has the frequency listed.

whoever replys should just book you a tech for a modem swap and to check your line.

i dont know why but even if your power levels are completly out of spec they never just get network to alter them they always send a tech first...

no dont change the frequncy just yet, i used to have a modem that used that software and the info you need IS in there i jsut have to remember where lol

you should have a signal page and you will see something like 1024 or 10240000 listed somewhere. if you find that it has indeed been upgraded to 10mb then you might be on an overloaded upstream.

to fix this you have 2 options, you should have a config page where you can change the frequency and the upstream channel ID. each frequency has 4 different upstream channels that work on your modem.

frequencies are

339000000 and 331000000 and each has upstream ID's from 1-4, try changing the ID first then save and reboot modem from the webpage. if your d/l speed is no better then change the frequency.

try here to test your speed as its less prone to web traffic http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/

.

Is that a newsgroup? Can't see it listed on their website

I posted on their support.broadband section anyway

K done that using the reset modem button in the software. Is that sufficient enough rather than taking the power out of the back?

The 4 different (not including the upstream 3 ID i was already using) values seeem to be near enough the same. One was 0.5meg slower than the rest but nothing major

yeah restting via the webpage will do the same job as unplugging it.

what did you change? the ID's or the frequency? if the ID's never helped never helped much then try the other frequency.

tbh your power level seems a bit high, have you contacted virgin?

Changed both I think. The only contact I've made so far is via a newsgroup post. What value should the power be at?

well mines currently at 6.9 dBmV and never goes above 8

if you use the newsgroups to get support then just drop a post on there and ask them to check your connection, they are far better than phone support but dont tell them you changed anything because they dont like you doing that as it goes against their "our system evenly balances UBR load" cobblers and a few other reasons ;)

Ill put everything back to the previous values before doing anymore. I posted my problem just then and at the end of the post i said 'should i adjust the frequency and value'. I forgot to add the power value though

Great, now the newsgroups won't connect to the server. Does this happen often? They probably won't reply for another few hours anyway
