Surprisingly unhealthy foods

I love cooking, so always make my own food. However, out of interest I looked at the ingredients + nutritional value of a pot of Lloyd Grossman Tika Massala sauce - It had just over 1000, I think it was 1010, kcal. Thats before you even add the suggested rice, chicken etc.

Madness.

Sugar is just sugar isn't it?

Well theres 'fake' sugar is there not? So it gives the presence of sugar but it isn't actually there. But it's still reasonably 'bad' for you.

Not that I care, I have a bar of Alpen light every day. Merely as they help my stomach.

Yup, make my own food too, especially pizza - much healthier with a little bit of mozarella than the lashings of cheese they stuff on store bought or take-out ones.

As for Tikka Masala sauce - don't know why you're surprised, it's pretty much cream, butter and tomato.

'fake' sugar isnt sugar then is it? its sweeteners?
Stuff like that isnt all that great either, if something tastes sweet you get an insulin spike or something dont you?

Well yes that's what I meant :) It's still reasonably bad, just not as bad I guess.

I don't take that much notice, if I know something has 'x' amount of sugar in it in one thing I have, I wilkl cut back on the sugar for the next meal or whatever.

Nope, Fructose and Glucose are the two main forms and combined they are Sucrose.

When you have Sucrose it's not too bad as it's digested in the upper intestines, but Fructose by itself passes through and ends up directed to the liver.

People who drink a lot of soft drinks in the U.S. (where they use HFCS, High Fructose Corn Syrup instead of sugar due to tax breaks) end up getting fatty deposits around their liver, and it's theorised that high intake of fructose leads to type II Diabetes and obesity.

Why are you surprised that its full of crap?
Almost all prepacked food (things like this pasta pot, sandwiches etc) is full of crap calories.

I will... I will. Just have to think of something more exciting to make than sandwiches :p.

Easy. Buy some mince, either lamb or beef, chicken etc... pre-make it the night before, or over cook at dinner time, and tuperware it up for the next day. I eat sandwiches maybe twice a week max, and tend to have plent of wholesome food to eat at work. I had about 300g of morrocan style lamb with some cous cous - I munch away throughout the day fantastic stuff.

Premake lots of bolognese or chilli con carne or a pasta bake etc... There's a lot of options open. You can for example make a big lasagne or sheppard's pie for the same price as couple of overpriced sandwiches, with decent quality meat. :)

Don't forget salads as well :)

I have them from time to time at work.

Or soup.

Oh of course that's a given. Well I'd say veggies & a little fruit is more important than salad in particular. I don't understand why people find it hard to achieve their 5 a day?

A lot of my diet is based on healthy nutrition combined with my weighlifting so it's quite carefully sculpted, however a bit of discipline is all you need to eat healthily.

Exactly that.

Willpower is the key. Prepare meals for work the night before.

I tend to create a meal for 4, and freeze 3 portions.

Lasagne, Pasta Bake, etc. The proper meals.

Also, I tend to have Wholegrain wraps with chicken as another alternative to an actual sandwich.

love them, Again, I prepare them the night before, Wrap them up in Cellophane and stick them in the fridge till morning.

Only meal I have in a week I would consider on the naughty side, is the sunday lunch my mummy cooks. And that's only down to the Mashed Spuds. Meat and mountain of Veg = Yum

Hardly un healthy though once a week.

My dinners are quite bad sometimes, but I can't exactly not eat them as my mother cooks them when I walk in the door. (Yes I still live at home, but hey, can't exactly move out on my wage.) And by unhealthy I mean them pre-done pastry type things, really don't like them very much.

I'd like to try and vary my food during the week, but it just costs so much at the moment for me to go out and buy a completly seperate amount of food just for myself...

However I will hopefully start doing more pasta, as that is nice.

morrocan style lamb with some cous cous

mmm, lamb tagine mmmm. Love the stuff. Do you know of any good recipes for 'hand' food. Ie, something you can eat like a Sandwhich or wrap, but without the carbs of bread? (Although my diet is getting pretty damn good now and cutting is going well, bread is still my vice.)

I love bread...just not plain white bread....Although I do like French bread every now and then.

Wouldn't mind knowing some thing's to eat instead of Sandwhiches every day at work.
